Despite a British law banning it back home, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1956, the first of over 100 #GreekCypriot boys were #birched by colonial authorities. Many of them were under 14 years of age. The #CorporalPunishment of children is a barbaric practice with no justification.
On independence of #Cyprus in 1960, #GreekCypriot politics were dominated by #enosis, union with Greece. #ThisDayInHistory in 1963 began #BloodyChristmas, a #pogrom against #TurkishCypriots that ended their joint control, displaced 30,000 of them, and destroyed 100+ villages.
