Emily Petty was an American nurse who provided relief to victims and survivors of the #GreekGenocide. In Jan 1923, she was involved in the evacuation of Greek orphans from Harput to Syria. She later provided relief to survivors in various parts of Greece.

The final phase of the #GreekGenocide took place at Smyrna (Tr: İzmir) in September 1922 when Kemalist forces entered the city and took part in an orgy of looting, rape and massacre that targeted the city's Christian population, primarily Greeks & Armenians. They then burnt the city to the ground.
The pillage of Foça (Gr: Φώκαια, Phocaea) and the massacre of over 100 Greeks in Jun 1914 occurred during the early phase of the #GreekGenocide. While the death toll was on a relatively small scale, the plan to force Greeks to flee en masse was accomplished.

The Greek Relief Committee (GRC), otherwise known as the Relief Committee for Greeks of Asia Minor was formed during World War 1 in direct response to the #GreekGenocide. The organization was based in New York and was operational between 1917 to 1921.

Feridunoğlu Osman Ağa was a brigand and Kemalist military commander responsible for the murder of a vast number of Greeks during the #GreekGenocide. Osman roamed the Black Sea region with his band of ‘cut-throats’ and was responsible for numerous massacres and deportations of Greeks & Armenians.
Samsun is a city located in northern Turkey along the Black Sea shoreline. During the #GreekGenocide, Greeks from Samsun and the surrounding region were deported in three waves: in 1916/17, 1921 and 1922. Before the genocide, Greeks in Samsun numbered ~80,000 (65% of the total population).
Tamama: The Missing Girl of Pontos is the English translation of a novel originally written in Greek by author Georgios Andreadis. The story revolves around a young girl who was lost during the relocation of Greeks during the #GreekGenocide.

The Greek Red Cross at Brousa [Grk: Προύσα] awarded Miss Bernice J. Everett of Franklin, New York a medal for her work in caring for refugees during the #GreekGenocide. Miss Everett superintended orphanages and soup kitchens and distributed supplies to over 14,000 refugees.

The Number 31328: The Book of Slavery details the experience of Elias Venezis in a work battalion during the #GreekGenocide. In 1922, Venezis was taken prisoner and enslaved in a battalion. Of the 3,000 conscripted into his labor brigade only 23 survived.

Giorgos and Athanasia Valakitsi of Boudja (Tr: #Buca). Buca is located 9 km from #Smyrna. Before 1922, its population was around 12,000 made up primarily of Greeks. In Sep 1922, Kemalists committed massacres, looting, abductions & other atrocities at Buca and the suburb was destroyed.

Charles Dexter Morris was editor of the #AssociatedPress news agency in N.Y during WW1 and later news editor for the Near East Relief from 1921-1924. He has been credited for taking some of the most recognizable photos depicting the final phase of the #GreekGenocide.
In 1978, the government of Konstantinos Karamanlis banned the screening of the #GreekGenocide film "1922" due to pressure from the Turkish Foreign Ministry who complained that the film would ruin Greek-Turkish relations.

On the 17th of Oct 1922, Ernest Hemngway found himself on a train to #Adrianople (today Edirne) in Eastern #Thrace to witness the evacuation of Christians. Hemingway observed the masses of #Greeks as they evacuated their homeland and for some miles walked alongside them. #GreekGenocide
On November 10, 1938, Mustafa Kemal ‘Atatürk’ passed away. Atatürk was the consummator of the #GreekGenocide. He was born in 1881 in Thessaloniki, Greece (then part of the Ottoman Empire).
