Wangari Maathai (1940-2011) was a Kenyan environmental biologist and political activist. After earning her B.S. and M.S. in biology in the 1960s in the U.S., she returned to Kenya to complete a Ph.D. in Veterinary Anatomy in 1971, becoming the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate. In 1977, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, a grassroots initiative focused on tree planting to combat deforestation and desertification, linking restoration with economic empowerment and social justice. Her work inspired global movements for sustainable development and the rights of marginalized groups. Maathai's criticism of corruption and deforestation policies led to clashes with authorities, resulting in smear campaigns, arrests, and attacks. Despite these challenges, she remained steadfast, using mobilization and advocacy to challenge oppressive systems. In 2004, she became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to development and peace.
