A blast from the past that is now more relevant than ever: #GREENZONING. I'm reposting this excellent article from @phnetwork.bsky.social 's 2019 Policy Resource Guide. We elevated this, along with many other excellent policies that have shifted markets. Looking at you #LosAngeles Dept. of Planning!
As an architect, it feels really natural to have a foot in advocacy, policy making, and education.
I am really surprised that more architects aren't engaged in this manner.
It not only great marketing, it is creating markets that you are then expert in.

We also got tapped to write a new ADU code for the city of Kent.
#GreenZoning
Variation of #Seattle6 on a smaller 40x100 lot:
Ground floor focus on flexible use:
Accessory Commercial Unit (ACU) ie cafe, shop or coworking
Short term ‘Flex flat’ rental for guest, caregiver, temporary disability of a resident or party room
#greenzoning #SeattleCompPlan
I wanted to compare Seattle’s basic development pattern using ADUs as townhouses against a more efficient use of Neighborhood Residential land (#Greenzoning ) like the #seattle6 .
If you think reformulating Single Family zoning to allow for more diverse housing types and a lot more households is radical, wait until you see the consequences of doing nothing.

Exciting news—our team got selected to help a local city find new ways to bring in more housing options around mass transit. Woot!
It’s the natural extension of the #GreenZoning work I’ve been doing!
The work is funded by HB1923
Thanks @joefitzgibbon @votenicolemacri et al

Housing form, governed by zoning, has bigger impact than energy efficiency. But let’s do both: legalize more housing options in compact forms like apartments, then build in super efficiency with...
For the future of new housing options in ‘single family zones’ we need to be very intentional abt the narrative framework. #GreenZoning is 1 way to frame future growth in a climate context but need to use complimentary economic, equity, and justice lenses for holistic approach.
Ready for my http://northwestgreen.org GREEN BUILDING SLAM + SUMMIT. #GreenZoning
I hope you're up for some kick ass graphs!!!!
What is #GreenZoning? Putting people close to jobs, transit, schools, parks and amenities, where they can live a low carbon life.
5) ..”Fundamentally, you need to make vehicles pollute less, make people drive less, or both, she said....”
One way is by applying #GreenZoning : put new residents where they won’t have long commutes, then in new very green, low energy buildings.
1) Great article here. Let’s unpack it to show how #GreenZoning can fight climate change

OK, so excited to have this article come out in the @naphnetwork 2019 Policy Resource Guide! it is kinda a summary of the latest #greenzoning infill in single family zone strategies.
Thank you @PassiveHouseBB for the opportunity to write about this!
#greenzoning step up intensity in zoning everywhere where we already live, work. Leave the rest as connected network of open spaces.

Seattle’s zoned development capacity map-showing where potential for new development is highest (reds). territory outside urban villages (white lines) is detached Single Family (olive). There is nearly no way to add households to those areas. That’s not #GreenZoning
