Conclusion: 1 tonne of glass eels → 200 tonnes of adult biomass → $10–20 million potential.
With weak enforcement, poor restocking uptake, and the SEG standard unable to stop this, the European market will remain exploited.

This affects endangered species management, trade oversight, and public trust. Until SEG publishes audit dates + reports, its “sustainable” label can’t be taken seriously.

Despite the eel’s status, SEG supports continued fishing, consumption and trade under its own standard. Now, with its ISEAL status suspended and publicly listed, that approach looks reckless, not responsible.

This is basic certification 101. Most responsible schemes automatically mark expired certificates as “Lapsed” or remove them entirely. SEG does neither — they leave outdated passes looking clean and current.

The SEG register does not show lapsed it only shows “Pass.” There’s no confirmation whether the certificate has been renewed or re-audited since June 2021.

You can’t lecture others on “trust” and then vanish when your own scheme loses its credibility.
If you want to act like authorities, explain the consequences.
Silence isn’t strength — it’s avoidance.

Where’s the evidence it works? No survival studies, no tracking, no silver-eel return data. Restocking without follow-up is just box-ticking — yet SEG certifies it with no public monitoring.

For a critically endangered species, “certified fishery” without guaranteed, traceable product is dangerously misleading.
We need real regulation, full traceability, and mandatory compliance — not voluntary labels.

Strengthening biodiversity: By boosting eel populations in these lagoons, the project supports aquatic ecosystem health—eel presence contributes to nutrient cycling and food-web stability.

Certification Changes
SEG’s certificates was updated on 11 November, but after people began reviewing it and asking questions, it was altered again on the 15th. Two changes in four days — why? What were they hiding?

SEG claims certified companies show “best practices.”
But 58% is NOT best practice.
It’s barely “acceptable” — if it’s acceptable at all.

SEG must be stopped from opaque certifications — the critically endangered European eel’s survival depends on transparency. Any shady practices in the glass-eel trade are unacceptable.

Even SEG admits:

“This does not guarantee that 100% of their stock is SEG certified.”
So a trader can sell uncertified eel and still appear on the “sustainable” list.
