Happy New Year to all Gustav and Imogen Holst fans past, present and future. After 2024´s busy #GustavHolst150 celebrations my coffee mug from Holst Victorian House Cheltenham has faded, so I’ve acquired a new one for the museum’s 50th birthday year in 2025. It’s the year to be there!
Front cover of book showing formal portrait of musician Fritz Hart
I’ve just devoured this new biography of musician Fritz Hart (1874-1949) by Tregear and Forbes. Available from Lyrebird Press, including as a download. Beautifully researched and written it sheds new light on his golden cohort of @rcmlondon.bsky.social students, including #GustavHolst150. Recommend.
My #Holst150 journey is now complete, and what a wonderful voyage of discovery it's been! 153 pieces (*), 416 tracks, almost 28 hours of music in the order he composed it, all on my #GustavHolst150 playlist.
Thank you for the music, Gus ❤️💙💚

It’s an extraordinary song cycle. If you want to know the story of how Australian music lover and later publisher Louise Dyer - for whom #GustavHolst150 wrote these songs - encouraged him to start writing songs again visit Holst Victorian House Cheltenham current exhibition, extended to April.

12. Betelgeuse
"...
Space is a wind that does
not blow on Betelgeuse,
and time - oh time - is a bird,
whose wings have never stirred
the golden avenues
of leaves on Betelgeuse."
These songs are one of the great discoveries of my #GustavHolst150 journey.

Super article for #GustavHolst150 by @joannawyld.bsky.social, as well as the RCM students performing the 2-piano version of Mars. The scores for that, previously worked on by Vally Lasker and given by her to the RCM illustrate vividly how Holst composed his piano versions first, orchestrating later.
Copy of manuscript score given by Gustav Holst to Adrian and Ann Boult in 1933
#GustavHolst150 handed this 1933 wedding gift to Adrian and Ann Boult for them to sing on their honeymoon, at Gregynog « and other nice places ». Hear it 29 November 7 pm at (LSF) London Song Festival’s all Holst concert plus Vedic Hymns, Humbert Wolfe Songs and more. Details on LSF website
As part of its #GustavHolst150 celebrations Holst Victorian House Cheltenham has digitised all 15 of its autograph scores. Great to visit but if you can’t wait you can turn the pages and listen to most scores via website. Early works plus Rig Veda (1910), Perfect Fool (1918), Dream City (1929) etc.
#ImogenHolst worked tirelessly to protect and promote her father’s legacy. Now in #GustavHolst150 2024 we can hear more of both their compositions and decide for ourselves what we enjoy. Public premiere of Imogen’s 1935 violin concerto @StAndrews Holborn London on 24 Nov 4.30pm - not quite sold out.
Another great achievement for #GustavHolst150 by @deeplyclassical.bsky.social

#GustavHolst150 has seen hardly any new recordings of his music. By contrast, the torrent of #Bruckner200 #NewReleases shows no sign of abating. Another timely trio arrives the week of the big guy's 200th birthday on September 4th, including No. 9 from Paavo Järvi and co.
