Also this week: another brace of Bruckner #NewReleases this week. Don't they know that #Bruckner200 is over?
Album cover. Bruckner: Symphony No. 7; Bates: Resurrexit. Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Manfred Honeck. Reference Recordings 2024.
#7 Bruckner: Symphony No. 7; Bates: Resurrexit
An Isle of Bliss standing majestically above the sea of unremarkable symphony recordings released to mark #Bruckner200. Among the most deeply felt, sonically detailed and, dare I say it, sexy Bruckner you'll ever hear. The Bates is a fun bonus.
Next up is this. Of all the #Bruckner200 recordings that came out, I liked this most - though not necessarily the cover art. Vlad always seems to look deep into a score, but still play it straight. He may well impale me later in this list as well.
Coming up on Friday, Dec. 6 at 2:00 pm EST, #Bruckner Symphony No. 8, LIVE with the NDR Elbphilhamonie Orchester and chief conductor Alan Gilbert.

Having seen the very same combination in London I would urge people to go. The big climax at the end left me feeling very emotional. A tour de force. #Bruckner200

Bruckner From the Archives, Vol. 4
Vienna Konzerthaus Quartet, Ferdinand Stangler, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Christoph von Dohnányi
Is it bad that my favourite #Bruckner200 releases aren't new, but rather recordings like these that are older than I am (I'm 56)?

Bruckner: Symphony No. 9
Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Paavo Järvi
#Bruckner200 has brought a flood of accomplished recordings that don't upset existing recommendations. This is another. Enjoyable but not overwhelming as Karajan, Giulini, Wand or (whisper it) Furtwängler are.

Bruckner & Klose: String Quartets
Quatuor Diotima
Bruckner's slight but attractive quartet works date from his student days. His student's ambition is impressive but his work ends up being a sprawl. An interesting #Bruckner200 byway all the same.
Plus more historic #Bruckner200 in the latest instalment of this enthralling SOMM Recordings series. This volume includes a 60+year-old recording of Symphony No. 5 directed by Christoph von Dohnányi, who celebrated his 95th birthday this month!
Speaking of composer anniversaries, the #Bruckner200 binge shows no sign of abating. This week a period instrument orchestra joins in Anton's anniversary antics. How new and romantic will this Bruges Bruckner be? You know how to find out.
#GustavHolst150 has seen hardly any new recordings of his music. By contrast, the torrent of #Bruckner200 #NewReleases shows no sign of abating. Another timely trio arrives the week of the big guy's 200th birthday on September 4th, including No. 9 from Paavo Järvi and co.
Hello Bluesky! A day after his 200th birthday, tell me your top four Bruckner recordings. I might do my favourite recording of every version of every Bruckner symphony before the end of #Bruckner2024 #Bruckner200, but for today I choose these four.

I continued my Bruckner 200th birthday celebrations with a first listen to Otmar Suitner and Staatskapelle Berlin in Symphony No. 8. It's Dave Hurwitz's top pick for this work on record. Not sure I'd go *quite* that far but it's damn good. #Bruckner200 www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt6F...
It’s #Bruckner200 & I’m watching the Stage+ stream from Luzern Festival Orchestra of symphony 7, my favourite by him. Nezet-Seguin conducting.

Today we pay respects to our dear Anton.

One day Sir John Barbirolli was flying into Houston with André Previn. The plane hit turbulence and the passengers were bucketed around, subjected to climbs and dives to terrify the most seasoned of flyers. At one point Sir John leaned over to Previn and whispered: ‘I can’t die yet. I haven’t done all the Bruckner symphonies.’
For the Bruckner Bicentennial today, this great story about John Barbirolli, told by Tony Duggan:

A very cool cartoon with a caricature of Anton Bruckner walking away from the publishing house. Johannes Brahms’s signature is prominent underneath the caption.
Bruckner leaves the office of Haslinger, Beethoven's publisher:
"The 12th symphony has been worked off. Relieved, he starts the second dozen."
Signed by Johannes Brahms, & other composers.
The Brahms-Bruckner fight reminds me of the Jack Benny-Fred Allen feud.

19th century formal portrait of Anton Bruckner
Anton Bruckner by Anton Miksel, 1893
"Bruckner had a visionary streak, as he attempted to reconcile the Romantic stirrings of his time with a respect for the protocols of classical form, while glimpsing the spiritual realms of the future."
- Anthony Tommasini

For today's Bruckner Bicentennial, Christian Thielemann conducts the 9th Symphony.
Thielemann chooses to end with the Adagio, rather than a completion of the unfinished finale: "There is a mystery here and we should leave it as it is."
