Dear Diary, A really cute guy named Corey from Cincinnati, OH sent me via Instagram DM some reference images for a potential drawing. Sometimes I try to get to know and understand my partner Todd better by interrogating him about his gay youth since his gay journey seems to have been the polar opposite of mine. Even though we have been together for more than two decades, Todd has always been pretty vague and mysterious on the topic of romance during his formative years. One might even get the impression that the subject makes him wildly uncomfortable; his brow furrows and he acts really nervous, possibly even defensive when I push him for Love and Sex answers and examples. While I was mentally searching for a setting for Corey’s portrait—and since Todd is also from Ohio—it dawned on me that this was an opportunity to once again drill Todd on his past in the guise of some Toledo, OH 80’s gay nightlife history. He provided some locations I’d heard before—Blue Jeans, Bretz Toledo, Hooterville Station, Caesars—but he also recalled an adult bookstore frequented by some of his Red Lobster coworkers on their lunch breaks. Todd couldn’t remember the name, though. One afternoon last year after breakfast for dinner at Denny’s in North Monterey, CA, Todd and I walked across the street to check out the Nu-Art Theatre and Fremont Adult Bookstore, where we had never been before. We spent some time talking to the owner and spooking the regulars, and the place had a very cool sexy edgy pervy queer punk vibe. Like I wanted to hang there. If I had loads of money to burn, I’d open a bar next door to the Nu-Art in the hopes of creating a “scene.” The Central Coast of California sure could use one.
