Marathon Hearing on School Vouchers Features Intense Bipartisan Opposition “There is a disconnect between the rhetoric and what the bill actually says,” Democrat James Talarico summarized of House Bill 3.

“Prioritization” [in #Texas] is window dressing because what matters is who actually gets the #voucher funds; who actually gets admitted; or who’s already been admitted,” #TxRepJamesTalarico said.

@ginaforaustin.bsky.social brings up an important point around #HB3, which would allow private schools to use funding to market their schools.

Public schools don’t get funding for that. Rep. Hinojosa says “That’s not fair.” #txlege

Email to Texas House Public Education Committee on HB 3:
HB 3 Defunds Public Education
Thank you for serving on the House Public Education Committee. I trust that you sit on this committee because you understand the value of public education for all Texans.

I am against HB 3 and encourage the committee members to vote against this bill. As written, this bill defunds public education at the expense of lower income families – transferring public funds into private hands to the benefit of wealthy families.

The Governor says he wants to give families the choice. But he’s not really giving them a fair choice. The state of Texas woefully underfunds public schools. When one of the two choices is lavished with funds from wealthy families while the other of the two choices is starved by the state legislature, it is not a fair choice. And even with vouchers, it will not be a choice for families with low income. The vouchers will not cover the full and true cost of a private education, and families with low income will stay in public schools that are even more substantially underfunded than they are now. My own school district in Round Rock could lose up to $20 million a year to this voucher program, much of it subsidizing wealthy families who have the luxury of ignoring the plight of public education and who already send their children to private schools.

We don’t want to choose private schools. We want to choose high-quality education and equal opportunities. Before considering a voucher program, first give families a real choice. A choice to choose a high-quality public education by fully investing in our public schools.

Thank you,
Sara Reeves
