On #ThisDayInHistory in 2001, the #HubbleSpaceTelescope detected a hydrogen atmosphere on #Osiris (#exoplanet #HD209458b). A "hot Jupiter", Osiris is a gas giant orbiting close to its star (much closer than Mercury is to ours), located about 48 parsecs from our own solar system.
Artist's impression of the exoplanet HD 209458b, a "hot Jupiter" orbiting very close to its star. Its atmosphere is evaporating, and recent observations suggest the presence of water vapor, potentially indicating the possibility of life beyond our solar system.
