Hockney's “California Dreaming” series, of which “A Lawn Being Sprinkled” is one piece, captures the west coast suburban life with images of swimming pools, low-slung houses and landscapes in pure acrylic color, simplified forms and geometric patterns. The repeated sprinkler motif – whispy white against lush green – screams “suburbia”. His California series explores the theme of human interaction on the environment; some compositions include human figures but many do not, with the human aspect simply implied. “A Lawn Being Sprinkled” belonged to Norman Lear, who bought it in 1978 for $64,000 (then a record price for a Hockney); it sold in 2024 for over $28Million.
