I think I'm down to one feature film (which I have already seen) in this year's streaming #HPLFF. The inperson festival is definitely more fun, but I'm glad Brian and @thegwen.bsky.social do the streaming one as it allows me to catch the films I missed in person.

The streaming edition of the HP Lovecraft Film Festival #HPLFF begins tonight. First up for me is the movie Tribe. The trailer for this played many times at the in person festival back in September, and I've been looking forward to this one.

Photo looking up at five rows of black woodcut prints hanging on clotheslines. The artwork depicts a strange figure shaped like a Jenny Haniver figure, but with wing-like fins covered in eyes. It's creepy looking and has sharp teeth. Do not trust if it says "Be not afraid."

40 angels over my printing press! I'll be letting them dry as long as possible before packing them up for H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival Kickstarter supporters. Not sure what the final tally of preorders is, but I promised an edition of 30, so that's how many will be numbered. #art #woodcut #hplff

A rectangular black-stained woodcut on an easel bearing the name Liv Rainey-Smith. The artwork carved into the wood depicts a sea creature with a humanoid shape and wing-like fins covered in eyes. It resembles a Jenny Haniver figure made out of a stingray. It has sharp teeth and a grimace, tentacle limbs, and a trailing tail.

Less than 1.5 hours until the end of the HPLFF Kickstarter -- which is the only way to preorder a first edition of this woodcut. Here's the state of Angel of Dagon. I'm still wrapping up tonal work on the limbs and torso. Otherwise, mostly done! #art #hplff www.kickstarter.com/projects/hpl...

Photo of a blue stained rectangle of wood bearing a red sketch. It sits on an easel bearing the name Liv Rainey-Smith, with a paper version of the sketch next to it. The art depicts a fish monster with a toothy grimace and and array of wing-like fins spread around it. All six fins are fully carved, complete with numerous eyes of different kinds. The head, torso, and tentacle arms are fully carved, as is a pair of fins around the hips, the tail, and the two tentacle legs. This monsterous angel is humanoid, but very fishy.

The previously described woodcut carving, now with a layer of shiny wet ink on the surface. THe carved portions are bright and pale in comparison.

The last of the carving, followed by inking and proof printing. Even though I use blue on the wood to help get an idea of what the finished art will look like, the first inking is always a revelation. #art #woodcut #hplff

The carving on much of the body was done with a u-gouge I want the skin to look a bit coarse, not pristine paper white for the most part. As always, it’s easy to remove more wood later, but not to add it back in! #art #woodcut #hplff

Although the body and head can look white if you just glance at the photos, I’m carving texture into the wood. I can always remove it if I don’t like it later. The “modesty” fins are a nod to depictions of angels wrapped in their own wings, as well as the Jenny Haniver shape. #woodcut #art #hplff

The previously described woodcut carving in progress, the chest of the monster is mostly carved, with lines somewhat suggesting a ribcage, though it’s more like a chestplate.

The angel of Dagon has 30 eyes in its fins, a little nod to the 30th anniversary of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. The teeth are no specific number, and were carefully carved with a stencil knife. #art #woodcut #hplff

Angels are typically depicted with wings as a means to suggest swift movement through the air, and otherworldliness. But what use would feathers be to an angel of a deep sea god? Dagon’s angels have fins. And lots of eyes, because I love me some “biblically accurate” angels. #art #woodcut #hplff
