These are the moments that leave him vulnerable, where the mara filters through the cracks in his mind and body and twines his marionette strings around its grasping fingers. These are the moments that he’s to avoid, but Kafka is here now, and so he lets himself indulge. When the barber shaves the stubble from his face is when he recognizes his reflection. In a panic, he tries to rise, but Kafka’s hands bear down on his shoulders. “Listen, Bladie. Relax.”
