Awesome... My #HackerSecretSanta found some cool (non-tech) stuff on one of my wishlist that I wanted.
#HSS2023
Looks like this will be the first year I don't send my #HackerSecretSanta gift in a locked ammo box (with lockpicks)... The gift they wanted is too large... lol

Snap of my packed suitcase, with HSS programmes and badge in the pocket
It's a wrap for #HSS2023 in Portland. Till next time! #HSS2024 in Mérida
Box of colourful donuts of various sizes, with everything on them, from Oreos to bacon. And, yes, one is being stabbed with a pretzel and will bleed red jam
Only in America! (Donuts for the #HSS2023 business meeting supplied by @bhgross144.bsky.social)
Enjoying Susanne Schmidt's analysis of 'epistemic candy' in the deferred gratification marshmallow test. This test of self-control has (wouldn't you know it) racist origins as well as issues in terms of socio-economic status. It was chocolate and Tootsie Rolls before it was marshmallows #HSS2023
I've seen two papers that have used illustrations to create a new view or connection with a historical person (one by an illustrator, and slightly animated, the other by AI). Is this part of a wider trend? #HSS2023
This is a roundtable that I'm very excited about: "What Does a Scientist Look Like: Historians of Science Reflect for #HSS100" at #HSS2023.
Staffan Müller-Wille is showing the agency of both subjects and data-gatherers appearing in the supposedly objective anthropometric forms of Franz Boas, showing nuance over questions of race, tribe and nation in study of indigenous Americans (which Boas ignored) #HSS2023
I look forward to seeing this interactive version of Joseph Priestley's Charts of History and Biography go online! infographics.uoregon.edu/projects/pri... We are hearing more about Priestley's visual strategies from Daniel Rosenberg at #HSS2023
Wonderful to hear former UCSB colleague @nickytheprof.bsky.social give the #HSS2023 distinguished lecture 🥳🥳🥳
As we head into our next coffee break, a quick reminder for any #histSTM/#histsci friends in Portland:

You can sing the Songs of Beedom for yourself here! www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/118292#... #HSS2023
Leah Malamut is talking about 19thC bee keepers in a session about experience and expertise. They had journals, societies, a strong sense of the value of experience and even music, published as Songs of Beedom! #HSS2023
Great #HSS2023 moment was taking 2 current and one recently minted PHD out for celebratory lunch
For those who like paper, physical copies can be purchased from UCL Press in Europe, or via University of Chicago Press in N America. (But it is a fat/heavy book. I do recommend the e-book. Images are better. And full-text searching!) #HSS2023
Friends! It’s here, the most magical time of year. Find me at #HSS2023 to learn about programs and fellowship opportunities @amphilsociety.bsky.social. Or just come say hello.

a local Portland tip for fellow historians of science: if you enjoy baked goods and wouldn't mind a stroll, Ken's Artisan Bakery is about a mile from the conference hotel. #HSS2023 #HSS23 #histsci
Excited for #HSS23 #HSS2023 in Portland, OR! Sun is rising in gorgeous fashion as I look for good coffee in downtown Portland, which apparently is not too difficult here.
Thank you @bhgross144.bsky.social for setting up a feed for the History of Science Society conference (hello, Portland, I am in you!). Sensibly, picks up both #hss23 and #hss2023.

One of the perks of waking up early to go to the airport? Spotting the #Moon and #Venus in the southeastern skies just before sunrise…
(See you in Portland, #HSS2023 friends!)

Here's something for HSS to consider for Isis... Those in Portland at #HSS2023 could start a conversation... @mattlavine.bsky.social
Just became a life member of the History of Science Society, easily the most serious commitment I've ever made to a scholarly association while sober. #HSS2023
