Excellent weekend at #HTLGI25 enjoying some in-tents debates on philosophy, neuroscience, and AI, in London. Highlights included Alex O'Connor hosting a vibrant discussion ft. Karl Friston & Susan Schneider on the structure of consciousness, and Hilary Lawson's views on language and reality👌
Having listened to leftist @sohrabahmari.bsky.social and pro-Brexit (Blue Labour) Maurice Glasman identifying post-liberalism as a problematic agenda, I'm left with the feeling that an intelligent, vigorous and bold defence of the rule-based, social democratic state is very much needed.

The need to fact check each of these statements and hold them to account, is hard, unrelenting work.
This requires time, effort and determination.
It tires out so many people, but we must not stop.

I'm right now attending the How The Light Gets sin festival in London, where they discuss the risks of Unelected Elites affect democracy....
In USA, the danger is the autocrat in the oval office.

In this panel of right-wing political actors, the definition of populism is described both as Identity and something 'popular'.
I'd say that today's populism more accurately means whipping up a frenzy by finger pointing, thus creating 'identity' by blaming others...

In a brilliant final conclusion, Tocci throws up her hands and says it like it is: we are not anxious enough when it comes to Europe's situation today, @nathalietocci.bsky.social
#HTLGI25
I 💯 agree with Timothy Garton Ash's conclusion: we have international problems but national politics.
Parties like @volteuropa.org are addressing this dichotomy, but everyone in society need to be able to discuss the European future.

The philosophy of materialism has long dominated physics and neuroscience. | https://bit.ly/4ngZ7Bq
Àlex Gómez-Marín argues that dismissing alternatives is the most dangerous form of pseudoscience. Presented in association with @closertotruth.bsky.social a partner of #HTLGI25 this weekend.

So many debates and thought-provoking ideas shared this weekend at #HTLGI25 #SlavojZizek #CatherineLiu #AlenkaZupancic #philosophy #languageoftheunconscious
joanna moncrieff says very clearly that we‘re pretending to treat medical issues with #antidepressants etc. but we‘re actually drugging us into feeling okay in a dysfunctional world. ouch and yes. #htlgi25
norman ohler speaks about „stoned sapiens“ pointing to evidence that sapiens evolved through and with the use of #psilocybin where neanderthals didn‘t. #fungi #psychedelics #htlgi25 „other species were too sober for the future“.
great panel on the role of #pychedelics in our societies at #htlgi25 festival: maria balaet, joanna moncrieff and norman ohler.
„there’s nothing more glamorous than trying to understand what is fundamental“ ivette fuentes. (did i mention she‘s great?) #htlgi25
ivette fuentes would bring physics and philosophy together. @alexrosenberg.bsky.social argues for the importance of reductionism as in going down to the very very very base of physiological interactions. #htlgi25
john dupré: physics does physics well, but the theoretical pipedream that in the end everything is physics is a myth. #htlgi25
fantastic hosting/moderation job by jessica frazier if you ask me. what is the #science or the new model that could hold the answers we‘re looking for? #htlgi25
and with a smile ivette fuentes invites into letting go of dear concepts, invites into stepping back and critically looking at the whole in a different way. the conversation might become cooperative and collaborative. what do we need to let go of? what could we see differently? #htlgi25
ivette fuentes is ready to reshape and revolutionize physics and develop methods that respect and recognize the whole! ovations in the area at #htlgi25 while @alexrosenberg.bsky.social somehow seemed to discard premedieval nonwestern science by stating physics science started 400y ago around here?
