At the age of 34, Pierre-Bloch enlisted in the French Army to fight the Nazis, and was captured by the Germans who discovered that he was Jewish. That made him even more of a target of the Nazi regime. He escaped and joined the French resis- tance, organized networks of resistors, and helped free Allied soldiers and Jewish refugees. Pierre-Bloch became known for bravery and resourcefulness. He was captured, again, by the Nazis and escaped, again, then joined resistance leader Charles De Gaulle in England. After the war, Pierre-Bloch became a vocal advocate for reconciliation as a way to confront Europe’s anti-Semitism and lay the groundwork for more widespread recognition of – and protections for – human rights. In 1968, Pierre-Bloch became president of the International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism. In 1981, he was named to the National Order of the Legion of Honour, the highest military and civil recognition in France.
