All in all, I have mixed feelings about Haitink's Mahler symphonies. Not sure if Haitink's 'restraint'/'integrity'/'good taste' tends to pay off in this music.

What is so great about Mahler 9? Klemperer called it Mahler's greatest achievement, but I don't get it and I don't know what to think of it. As I hear it, it suggests gravitas, high seriousness, especially in the finale. There must be more to it. #classicalmusic #mahler #haitink #concertgebouw

But No.3 is quite good (I wouldn't call this symphony great). Haitink adds no mannerisms, no hysteria, and that's fine with me. His Mahler tends to be sane rather than sanitized. Again, the finale is pompous, at the very end, but that's the composer's fault.

Unfortunately, No. 2 does not clearly confirm my hypothesis. Movements 3-5 are mostly OK―the finale is too much for me anyway, I find it pompous―, but the first two are slow and dull. Is this good music or kitsch? Haitink makes a strong case for kitsch. #classicalmusic #mahler #haitink #berlin
