🌍 Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) The Hamerkop (Hammerhead in English) also known as the Hammerhead Stork, or Umbrette, is a medium-sized, brown wading bird with a distinctive hammer-shaped head crest. It is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, typically inhabiting wetlands, forests, and savannas near water. Known for its industrious nature, the Hamerkop is a prolific and compulsive nest builder, creating massive, domed nests out of sticks. These birds are usually seen in pairs, foraging for fish and amphibians in shallow water.
