This cascading waterfall can be found on the trail up to Hanging Lake in Colorado. One of a few places where the drainage from Hanging Lake creates a lovely cascade. Make no mistake, folks, this hike is not for those who enjoy an easy stroll, and the last hundred yards or so might scare the britches off of you. However, it's safe, and the view once you get past the staircase is nothing short of amazing.

A small section of the Grottos over the top of Independence Pass, near Aspen, CO. Created by glacial flow a few years back, this area is stunning in its scope and beauty. A very short hike reveals many wonders on the way to the waterfalls, and once you reach the top, you can hear the falls calling you by name. Whether you go in the summer or winter (it does close in the dead of winter), you'll find something that will take your breath away. Cascades, roaring water, blue/green mineral content on the river bottom, to ice caves that form in the winter.... this place offers some splendid locations to just sit back and do nothing but stare in awe at the amazing job nature has done here.

Found at the bottom of Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride, CO., this creek releases just the right amount of water to keep the pond full at the base of the falls. Many times during the year, this location will have two giant waterfalls that make it double epic (if that can be a thing). There is a trail leading up the side of the mountain, and for the rest of us, there is a road (4x4 would be best) that will take you this far, but beyond this bend in the road...it's one way, and you're not going that way. One can go over the top and come down Black Bear Road, but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone with a fear of heights, steep roads, switchbacks, driving through creeks, things that are high on the list of things that suck, but if you have the skills and proper vehicle....it's a mind blowing expedition. If you're into old mining history or vistas of the San Juan Mountains that you just can't find anywhere else....this is your jam!!

Almost like a tropical paradise....in the middle of Colorado. Hanging Lake is an amazing location that has a natural lake... basically suspended in what seems to be....air. Looking somewhat like a giant nest filled with water and logs, the colors in the water and logs trapped under the surface create an amazing display of nature's awesome power. Make no mistake, the hike up to the lake is brutal for some and has a 1000-foot vertical climb in just 1.2 miles. Depending on the time of year you go (some of us go in the winter), you might have to climb over avalanches and fallen trees. But the beauty that awaits you at the top will take all that leg pain away... for a little while. You will find several cascading falls on the path up that are stunning as well. No need to worry about being alone, as rangers and hikers are always alert, checking on those who look to be struggling or just need an atta boy! You'll need a timed entry permit as they are trying to keep this area protected for people to enjoy for decades to come.

The green moss and plant life bring amazing color and texture to the lake and resemble the colors of a tropical paradise. Several smaller falls dot the landscape, with a giant waterfall just above the lake called "Spouting Rock". Not a trail for those with mobility issues, it is an enjoyable hike to the top with the last 100 feet being the most challenging as you ascend a natural staircase that looks to be quite dangerous, but there are handrails to keep you safe! The canyon itself is not the place to be in times of heavy rain as flash flooding is an issue. However, the rangers and warning system will let you know if danger is lurking. This might all sound scary, but i just want to make sure you know...this is no stroll in the park, it's a serious hike with consequences for not paying attention....but it's worth every second of difficulty!

This is a portrait image of the cliffs surrounding the Colorado River in the Hanging Lake Trailhead section of the Colorado River. The water flow downstream was just a trickle at the dam and there wasn't any wind setting up these conditions. I hiked for six miles along the river and this was one of the more stunning views. The reflection shot is not quite a 50/50 shot, but close. In the background you have a nearly sheer cliff on the left of visibly layered mountain in shades of tan and brown with a light orange tinge. Large pine trees dot the cliffside and the top of the fate cliff. From the left, the ridge of the cliff starts below the clear blue sky and traverse down to the right where it disappears behind a sharply upward sloping ridge of a different cliff, larger, closer and far more dramatic. Once it reaches its peak at the top of the frame it dips slightly until out of frame. This cliff also is festooned with pine trees and at eh bottom and along the river a host of leafless aspens. Below this dramatic cliff is the opposing shore of the river with a train track on the flat space near the shoreline disappearing off frame on the right. The rest of the frame is the reflection of the same in perfect opposition except for where it meets the near shoreline on the left oof the frame at the photographers vantage point. the near shoreline is dried yellow brush and bleached rocks. Some of the underlying clay is visible below the surface of the water near this shoreline and a single bleach sharp stone breach the surface. There are no signs of human beings in the frame or on the hike. It is remarkably peaceful for such majestic scene.

This is a landscape shot of an orange-rock cliff face festooned with patches of white snow angling up into the sky from the bottom left of frame to the peak on the top right. The sandstone cliffs are layered at the same angle with many vertical and angled cracks and trees finding purchase sporadically across the face. In the background is a traditional shaped mountain covered in pine trees whose horizon started middle of frame left to its intersection with the orange cliff two thirds to the right. Above is a blue sky with what hazy clouds near the mountain tops. There is a large shaft of sunlight moving from top left to bottom right illuminating most of the frame and giving bright color to the mountains. You can almost feel the warmth of the sun, or at least imagine what it feels like. The lower third of the frame remains in shadow.

This entry to #MountainMonday was shot last month in #GlenwoodCanyon at the #HangingLake trailhead in the #RockyMountains of #Colorado. It was a cloudy hike until the sun burst on the scene!

The mountains surrounding the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon form a V in the background and are otherwise reflected perfectly in a small, calm of the otherwise frozen surface of the river. Blue skies with wispy white clouds are present in both the sky and the reflection along with the orange snow covered nearly sheer cliffs festooned with green pines. A small bank of clumpy dried long grass bent by a blanket of snow are in front of the reflective mirror of water.

Spent a morning hiking around the #Colorado river yesterday at the #HangingLake trailhead and found a tiny, gorgeous, calm, section for this #Mountain capture in wonderful morning light.

Grizzly Creek Fire Crosses Hanging Lake, But Spares The Scenic Spot From Direct Damage But officials caution that there's no confirmation yet that the natural landmark or the area around it has actually burned.
