🌎 Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula caparoch) The American subspecies of the Northern Hawk Owl has a hawk-like appearance with a long tail, pointed wings, and a round head with a white face bordered in black. Its plumage is dark brown and white, heavily barred underneath. Its distribution is primarily across the boreal forests of Alaska and Canada. It is nomadic, moving southward into the northern US in winter, especially when prey is scarce. It is unusual for an owl as it is mostly diurnal (active by day). It hunts from prominent perches, like treetops, flying fast and low, and can hover before swooping on small mammal prey. Two other subspecies are recognised. He/she is guarding its lunch, frozen solid in the tree.

This owl worked really hard to attempt to remove its cached prey, but was not successful. The vole may have been wet when it was placed here.

I was in Oslo, Norway, last week & I did a tour with the Oslo Birder, Simon Rix on 4/2. The bird I most wanted to see was this #hawkowl, which is overwintering close to the city. The wintery conditions were challenging for photography, but being in the snowy forest was brilliant!

I was really excited to come across this rare bird yesterday and to get a few photos. This Hawk Owl was a beautiful site to watch and photograph 🤎🤍🤎
