🌎 Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula caparoch) The American subspecies of the Northern Hawk Owl has a hawk-like appearance with a long tail, pointed wings, and a round head with a white face bordered in black. Its plumage is dark brown and white, heavily barred underneath. Its distribution is primarily across the boreal forests of Alaska and Canada. It is nomadic, moving southward into the northern US in winter, especially when prey is scarce. It is unusual for an owl as it is mostly diurnal (active by day). It hunts from prominent perches, like treetops, flying fast and low, and can hover before swooping on small mammal prey. Two other subspecies are recognised. Gemini 3 (Edited) Conservation status: Uncertain (COSEWIC) Fun fact: These owls are considered nomadic, not strictly migratory.
