Degrees of hearing loss, from mild to profound
Hearing loss is measured by identifying the quietest sound that can be detected (but not necessarily understood!!!). Use the following terms to indicate the degree of hearing loss. Hearing Within Normal Limits (not ‘Normal Hearing’):sounds can be detected from -10-20 dB Mild: sounds can be detected from 26-40dB Moderate: sounds need to be 41-55 dB to be detected Moderate-severe: sounds need to be 56-70 dB to be detected Severe: sounds need to be 71-80 dB to be detected Profound: sounds need to be above 80 to be detected (at which point you would feel them too!) 50% hearing loss?? Save your “percentages’ talk for figuring out how much that cute sweater will cost or how long it will take to pay off your car!

......but it makes the voice grow fainter!!! Doubling the distance between you and your student means a 6 dB loss (that is a lot!). There is a difference between hearing and hearing clearly!. Strategic seating and use of the RM system is crucial for a student with hearing challenges (and their classmates too!) to fully access the teacher’s voice.
Back of the classroom can be too quiet.
