A drawing of a small basket, half-filled with wild blackberries. We picked berries today. Ludo wanted to make jam for his mother, and it's the perfect time of year for them, so we headed off to a meadow where I knew some briars grew. It took a while to gather enough for our little cooking project, mostly due to Ludo eating them, but we managed. I couldn't help it; he'd look at me with the saddest eyes, begging for another, and I couldn't say no. His childlike excitement was infectious. His tail would swish back and forth, and his eyes sparkled. I'd hold one out for him to eat, and more often than not, he'd nip me in his enthusiasm. And poor, sweet Ludo, his ears would droop, and he'd apologize over and over again, and I would just laugh and tell him it's fine. I feared that there wouldn't be any left, but, once again, Ludo's luck saved us. One bush in particular was so laden with berries that it drooped under all the others, but that was to our benefit. Its weight pulled it underneath the other briars, so most animals had difficulty reaching it. …Us included. I'd gotten quite a few scratches from the brambles, despite Ludo's valiant efforts to shield me from the thorns. My arms and fingers were a network of tiny red lines, and there were even a couple on my face. But they were small, almost not worth the very little effort it would take to heal them. Ludo still insisted on healing them all. He kissed each one afterwards. Even the little finger pricks that didn't break the skin. —-- Writing from Ludo Kisses on her fingertips, every single one. His eyes locked on hers with a flicker of desperation. Where the briar had dug in prior. Berry pulp stained her flesh, where she had hand fed him and Ludo bit the berries too aggressively. Sometimes her fingers got in the way and he'd profusely apologize. Cal called them love bites, nothing more. Ludo knew she wasn't hurt seriously, but he still cared deeply and was by her side. An act of admiration…
LRP that piece by Nev is so near and dear to my heart. It's based off of an unpublished #Caludo journal entry that @shaaloani.bsky.social and I wrote together, and I'm just trying not to cry every time I look at it because it's so good...
