My illustration of the chicken-like Heath Hen. The Heath Hen was a subspecies of the Greater Prairie-Chicken that inhabited scrubland and grasslands across New England. Once abundant, habitat loss and hunting drove steep population decline. The last surviving population lived on Martha's Vineyard until 1932, when the final male, "Booming Ben," died, marking the subspecies' extinction.
Heath Hen (Tympanuchus cupido cupido, extinct). From my book "A Field Guide to Cape Cod," Yale University Press. a.co/d/eK4A0sd
