This is "From an East End Window" by Henry Silk from 1931. Henry rented a room from his sister, Ellen Hawthorn (Elwin's mother) at their family home at 11, Rounton Road in Bow & this was the view from Henry's bedroom window. #HenrySilk #EastLondonGroup

Today would have been Henry Silk's birthday as he was born on Christmas day in 1883. This is "Snow" by him from 1928. It was the view from his bedroom window at the rear of his sister, Ellen Hawthorn's house at 11, Rounton Road in Bow. #henrysilk #botd #eastlondongroup
Each year on #ArmisticeDay I post "Mutt & Jeff" by Henry Silk which dates from c.1931. Henry served in the trenches on the Western Front & was gassed, along with so many of his comrades. The ribbons on his medals are transposed, which was not uncommon. #HenrySilk #LestWeForget
This is "Boots & Polish" by Henry Silk which is undated but I suspect that it comes from c.1931-32. Henry was, by all accounts, almost a recluse, (his nephew, Elwin Hawthorne painted a picture of Henry with that title) so a lot of his work features "close-up" images like this. #HenrySilk

Good evening, Quinn @quinnpiper.bsky.social & thank you for picking up on this post from Anne Louise @annelouiseavery.bsky.social . Here are "Mutt & Jeff", Pipe & Matches" & "Boots & Polish", all by Henry Silk that are referred to in the post, I believe. #HenrySilk #EastLondonGroup
This is "Hat on the Table" by Henry Silk from 1930. It is typical of much of Henry's work in so far as it depicts a scene from the room that he rented from his sister, Ellen Hawthorn (Elwin's Mother). The painting is in the collection at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. #HenrySilk #EastLondonGroup
This is "Old Ford, E" by Henry Silk from 1931. The subject of the painting was the Christ Church Mission, which is still there in what is now Crown Close. #HenrySilk #EastLondonGroup
Here's a relatively rare example of work in oils by Henry Silk: a lot of his known work is in watercolour. This is "St James' Road, Old For, E" from 1933. The red-brick building to the right was the lodge house at the Bonner Bridge entrance to Victoria Park: destroyed during WW2. #HenrySilk
Ah, how interesting @theunhurriedreader.bsky.social on both counts. Here's a great favourite of mine from his "table-top" style of work. This is "Pipe & Matches" by Henry Silk from c.1931/32. #HenrySilk #EastLondonGroup #SundayMorning
