Henties CEO dumped after nearly two years suspension Renthia Kaimbi The Henties Bay chief executive officer Elizabeth Coetzee’s one-year and nine-month suspension ended without a hearing when her employment contract expired on 31 July 2025.  She now plans to take legal action against the council. A leaked report detailed several serious allegations that led to Coetzee’s suspension in October 2023. What was meant to be a six-month investigation stretched into one year and four months, sparking ministerial intervention and public criticism. Charges served to Coetzee in December 2024 included duplicating travel claims from Henties Bay and Gobabis municipalities for N$11 725, awarding a contract to RedForce Debt Management without competitive bidding. She was also charged for backdating an addendum to legalise the deal, and breaching confidentiality by allegedly leaking a councillor’s details to a politician, which led to a defamation case. Coetzee told the Windhoek Observer that she waited nearly two years for the chance to present her case, only to see her contract expire without a hearing.  She denied all allegations.  “They just wanted to get rid of me. I have never stolen anything from Henties. Gobabis even made a double payment, for which they requested the additional money back. How is it that I am being accused of fraud and theft if the council got the money back and not even from me?” she questioned. On the RedForce contract, she said the procurement committee recommended the appointment and that she acted on its advice.  She added that the confidentiality claim was baseless and intended to target her.  “Despite that, the council lost their court cases about the RedForce issue. Even the alleged leaking of a councillor’s details didn’t go well in court,” she said. Although the council approved a settlement agreement, it never implemented it.With her contract expired, the council now argues that no employer-employee relationship exists, making further proceedings unnecessary. In June, urban and rural development minister James Sankwasa intervened in the suspension of Coetzee. During his visit to the Erongo region, Sankwasa held lengthy discussions with the council and said the ministry could not ignore the prolonged suspension. This week, Sankwasa told the Windhoek Observer the suspension was unnecessarily prolonged.  “Whatever she wants to do now, she can do to protect her rights. That’s her right,” he said. Namibia Public Workers Union western regional coordinator Richard Kayimbi confirmed the case would be referred to the Labour Commissioner for unfair labour practices and dismissal.  He said the council initially proposed to withdraw the charges in exchange for an ex gratia payment equal to severance pay and to pay her leave days and remaining remuneration until 31 July 2025, but this agreement was never implemented. “At the genesis of her wanting to go through a disciplinary hearing, council willingly wanted her to enter into a settlement agreement. To this end, our member remains innocent and has not been found guilty of any misconduct, ,” Kayimbi said.

Wild Dogs FC wins Henties Bay Harambe Charity Cup Erasmus Shalihaxwe Wild Dogs Football Club from Karibib were crowned champions of the Henties Bay Harambe Charity Cup over the weekend in Henties Bay. The team walked away with N$15 000 in prize money, a new soccer kit, 20 gold medals, and a trophy.  The runners-up, Amatuks, also from Karibib, received N$8,000, a new soccer kit, and 20 silver medals. Semifinalists Henties Bay United Football Club and Jomo Coastal Football Club from Swakopmund each received N$3 500. Tournament organiser Alderman Skini said the event was a success, bringing teams and communities together through sport and charity. He thanked all 16 teams that registered for the tournament and praised their spirit of unity and support. “Unfortunately, the event was marred by a tragic incident involving a fatal accident between Spitzkoppe and Henties Bay, which claimed the life of a young and talented player. Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss. Two teams from Usakos were unable to participate due to this unforeseen tragedy,” said Skini. The tournament also included charitable activities. Organisers provided lunch to pensioners and people with disabilities in Arandis. Similar support will be extended to pensioners and people with disabilities in Henties Bay at the Golf Club this week. “We express our heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors, volunteers, participants, and supporters who made this event possible. We remain committed to fostering community spirit and supporting those in need through future initiatives. Together, we stand united in memory of our fallen teammate and in hope for a better tomorrow,” said Skini.

Water supply restored at Henties Bay, Swakopmund Namwater has announced that power to the Omdel water scheme was successfully restored by the Erongo Regional Electricity Distributor, allowing for uninterrupted water flow to Henties Bay and Swakopmund. The Orano desalination plant, which had been offline due to elevated sulphur levels in the intake water, came back online at 23h00 on 21 April. However, Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) says the plant is currently operating at reduced capacity as it continues to struggle with fluctuating sulphur spikes and variable water quality. Over the past two days, intermittent shutdowns occurred whenever sulphur concentrations exceeded acceptable thresholds. “NamWater is actively monitoring and managing the situation in collaboration with relevant partners. Despite these challenges, normal water supply to Henties Bay and Swakopmund has resumed and remains stable at this time. “We thank the residents for their patience and urge continued responsible water use as we work to ensure the reliability of water supply under these conditions,” says NamWater spokesperson Lot Ndamanomhata The post Water supply restored at Henties Bay, Swakopmund appeared first on The Namibian.

Henties Bay municipality opens satellite office at Omdel Residents of Henties Bay’s Omdel informal settlement and surrounding communities will no longer need to travel long distances to access municipal services. This follows the inauguration of a satellite office at Omdel as part of the town’s efforts to improve service delivery and accessibility for residents. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, the town’s mayor, Lewis Vermaak, said the opening of the satellite office is a reflection of the town’s commitment to proactive governance and inclusive service provision. “This very building, which once served as a family care centre, has been an integral part of our community, offering much-needed support to families, support groups, and youth. “However, as our town has expanded and the needs of our people evolved, the council deemed it necessary to repurpose this facility into a satellite office to better serve our growing population,” Vermaak said. He said Henties Bay is experiencing remarkable growth, with industries preparing to establish themselves in the area. This, he said, will lead to increased economic activity and employment opportunities, making efficient municipal service delivery more critical than ever. The chairperson of the Henties Bay municipality management committee, Michael Skini, emphasised that accessibility was at the heart of this initiative. “By establishing a satellite office here at Henties Bay, we are ensuring that vital municipal services are within reach for all our residents. Whether it is obtaining permits, accessing information about local programmes, or voicing concerns, this office will serve as a welcoming hub for everyone in our community,” he said. Community members welcomed the development and expressed relief at the improved access to services. “I no longer have to travel to the head office in town to access municipal services. This makes life much easier for us,” Omdel resident Moses Seibeb said. The front desk officer at the new office, Alicia Shanyengana, also underscored the benefits of the satellite office, particularly in streamlining bill payments. “Residents will now be able to collect their water bills in advance, unlike before when bills would pile up because travelling to the main office to access them there was an inconvenience to many,” she explained. The satellite office is also expected to support local businesses, provide emergency coordination, and serve as a centre for community engagement and education.
