“I…” Higuchi started out, halfway through their lunch. “I’m sorry I wasn’t clear enough in my email.” Gin shook their head in negation, temporarily putting the chopsticks down so they could properly sign their response; speaking up in front of her wasn’t a problem anymore, but that was more practical given how the two of them were surrounded by noise. ‘It’s fine. Should’ve supposed you’d sent more details if it was about a job.’ Upon that, Higuhi let out a nervous laugh. “Well! I guess so, but…” She took a deep breath, and right after that the speed of her speaking increased significantly. “I wasn’t sure about how to ask you to come by, because I know things have been… tense?” That was one way to say it, sure, but Gin wasn’t really mad at her anymore; hadn’t been in long. Sure, they hadn’t been exactly thrilled about being chased around the city because Higuchi’s jealousy had acted up and prompted her to come up with a movie-plot-for-a-boring-day kind of explanation, but… it was difficult to stay mad at her. “So-- I didn’t want to act like nothing happened, but I also didn’t know how to bring up the subject so…”

She went on, doubling down on both reasoning and apologies, and as intently as Gin intended to listen (and was listening, really), they couldn’t help but dedicate a thought or two about how pretty she looked. Because she was, truly. Whether capable of seeing it or not, Higuchi was gorgeous, highly capable and bestowed with a heart that might not always be suited for the mafia work but had contributed in saving Ryûnosuke when that enemy organization took advantage of him being incapacitated to kidnap him. If only she could drop her tunnel vision towards making goggly eyes at him, who would never reciprocate anyway for a myriad of reasons… … and looked elsewhere, like in Gin’s direction… Little did they know yet, though, that such a wish was bound to not only come true but it had been kickstarted already too.

That’s the kind of love I’ve been dreamin’ of The dinner, the whole event, was nice. Still, Gin was pretty much aching to go home anyway; they could fare well in situations like that one, but would be lying if saying they weren’t craving the comfort of their own apartment. Fate, though, had other plans. “Hi, Gin.” Higuchi started out, approaching them with a glass of wine in hand. She was, and that would be revealed to Gin sooner rather than later, making a bit of a use of liquid courage for what she was about to say. “I, huh-- are you free when this ends?” ‘Yes, I was going home.’ Gin signed, tilting their head not in confusion, but rather encouragement. “Well, my sister’s on her school trip, so I’ll be alone.” She continued, holding onto the glass so tightly one might think it would slip from her hand otherwise. “So, if you’d like to come by…” Of course, it didn’t take a genius to know what Higuchi was hinting at with those words, especially added up to the way in which she had struggled to say it at all. It didn’t take a genius to know, and probably neither did it to anticipate Gin’s own reaction and response… especially when their first step was getting closer to her and leaning in so only she would hear it. “I’d love to.” They whispered in her ear, once close enough to do so.

Higuchi adopting a somewhat teasing demeanor wasn’t something that happened very often, and thus Gin was both relishing the moment… and fighting against getting too flustered. So far, by the way, only the first part was successful. For obvious reasons. “Well…” Higuchi was saying, slightly blushing too but in definitely a better condition than Gin’s own. “I’m just saying it was cute, seeing you like that.” Maybe, were she talking about anything else, he wouldn’t have reacted so strongly-- but the current topic was the way Gin had reacted when Dazai hit him with the ‘You were this tall when I last saw you, Gin-chan’ and that made things difficult. In fact, he might be close to reaching the same levels of red in his face, with an expression to match as well. “Don’t say that.” He replied, also similarly to right then, placing a hand over Higuchi’s mouth and glancing away. Though that didn’t last too long, since Higuchi responded by kissing the palm of said hand. Which, yes, only made things even worse in terms of Gin’s flustered state.

Becoming a vampire had been confusing, confusing and scary, not just because of the process of turning in itself but mostly due to having been strung around like a puppet at the rhythm of orders impossible to ignore. Sure, Gin had at least caught a glimpse of their brother after the latest news about him were when he had been declared dead in action, but actual relief didn’t arrive until vampirism was gone and Ryûnosuke remained alive. Plus, they still feared for him, since right after their reunion he had entrusted them with the safety of a little redhead girl who answered to the name Aya and left again to contribute in saving the day as he was seemingly getting used to. Though, it could have been worse. Waiting without nothing to do would have been worse, for starters. “I’d ask if he’s your boyfriend, but even with just seein’ half of your face it’s easy to see how you’re so damn alike.” Aya was saying as the two of them entered a hopefully abandoned store that would have to do for the time being. Smart. “Siblings, right?” Smart indeed, and there was a smidge of pride in her expression when Gin nodded to confirm her suspicions; it was the closest they had seen to a smile in the girl’s face so far, which wasn’t rare given the current circumstances.

Besides, they might not be an expert in kids nor the most socially aware person ever, but still remembered how being a kid under deep distress was, and it was written all over Aya’s demeanor: she was no stranger to loss, and some had been recent. Gin could have asked about it, maybe. But the two of them had just met, and they were quite busy with scanning around for possible threats. Especially after hearing footsteps nearby, coming closer. Tapping the girl’s shoulder and pointing to a table beside them, Gin instructed Aya to take cover, who nodded and ducked to hide under it. Then, drawing their knife, Gin dashed forward, ready to meet whoever was coming and meeting a gun’s barrel first and a familiar face second. “Who the hell’s the-- Gin?!! Gin!!!” In a matter of seconds, Higuchi had lowered said gun, and closed the distance between them to hug them, with utmost confidence about Gin moving their knife out of the way on time. Which, of course, they did; making it disappear inside one of their sleeves as it had been concealed before, Gin reciprocated just as quickly.

The last time they were both together for real, since the actual last time it had been when Higuchi had been already turned and did nothing more than attack the Black Lizard and bit them (though it was in a way they wouldn’t mind experiencing again if in-- hm, a different context), had been at Ryûnosuke’s funeral, where she had held Gin’s hand through it all and managing to stay strong despite the tears running through her cheeks. And now? Now they could both breathe, even if just for a moment. “I… I’m so glad you’re okay.” Higuchi said when they separated, making them smile under the mask; there was no doubt she would notice it. “Oh, and who are you?” She then added, turning towards Aya. ‘I’m so glad you’re fine too.’ Hands now free, Gin moved onto signing. And explaining, evidently. ‘Nii-san asked me to keep her safe.’ “Name’s Aya, by the way.” The kid herself chimed in. “I see.” Higuchi nodded, her eyes darting from one to another in the meantime. “And nice to meet you, Aya-chan.” After offering her a polite smile, Higuchi went back again to lock eyes with Gin, clearly already making plans. “How can I help?” Before offering a useful response, Gin simply beamed.
