Holtec International Unveils “Mission 2030” Plan to Deploy Small Modular Reactors at Palisades Site in Michigan - Cozzy Energy Solutions
Holtec International has announced a major initiative to deploy its Small Modular Reactors (SMR-300s) at the Palisades site in Michigan, USA, under the moniker "Mission 2030." This ambitious project aims to bring two SMR-300s online at the former nuclear power plant, which shut down operations in 2006. At the heart of the Mission 2030 initiative is Holtec's proprietary SMR-300 design. This 300-MW pressurized water reactor boasts a number of innovative features that enhance its operational efficiency and safety. By being placed below grade, it utilizes gravity-driven cooling to minimize environmental impact. Furthermore, on-site underground storage for used fuel means the plant can be deemed "Walk-Away Safe" in the event of an unexpected loss-of-coolant accident. Construction work on the Palisades SMR project is currently underway, with Holtec set to begin the formal U.S. NRC permitting process early next year. Significant progress has already been made at the site, including comprehensive environmental studies and soil borings. These efforts demonstrate Holtec's commitment to ensuring that the project is executed in a responsible and sustainable manner. Holtec has secured an expanded cooperation agreement with Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) to develop a 10-GW fleet of SMR-300s across North America by the 2030s.
