Home made dog food. The chicken meat (thighs and drumsticks) is slow cooked overnight, then carefully deboned. The broth is used to cook the veggies & rice, which is 1/2 brown rice and 1/2 white rice. I do that in Instant Pot, then mix back with the shredded meat. After mixing, I portion it out into meal-size amounts. The proportion is about 6# chicken thigh and drumstick (weight before cooking), 1 cup dry brown rice, 1 cup dry white rice, 1 pound each cut green beans, cut carrots, cut squash, 1/2 pound spinach, and one sliced apple. The veggies and rice are cooked with chicken broth from the slow cooked chicken, in an instant pot. The brown rice takes longer, so is cooked first in the chicken broth then mixed with the meat. The original recipe was all white rice, but that was constipating for Rufus. Switching half to brown rice was much easier on his system. It also didn't contain squash, but we grow it and I think it's a healthy food. The chicken is the main cost factor. We shop around for a good price. For half of the year, the green beans and squash are from the garden, pre-cut and frozen. I have to split it all and cook half at a time, because the bowl and Instant Pot don't hold enough for the whole thing at once. Rufus has a more balanced diet than I do! This is about an hour of cooking, every 12 days or so. 90 minutes if I'm lazy. Not a lot of time, considering it's dome for love.

These containers hold about the right amount. We don't eat those plant margarines any more, but the containers last for many years. Today the recipe made 24 meals. The left over broth is used as a between meal treat. It gels like Jello, so I know there's protein in there. I keep 3 day supply of meals in the fridge, and freeze the rest. As we use the refrigerated meals, I move more to fridge from freezer, to thaw out. These containers survive dishwasher without problems. Originally I used freezer bags or bought containers, but these are pretty much 100% reused and would otherwise have gone to landfill.

Wooly black dogs are hard to photograph! Rufus likes to clean out the mixing bowl. Zero waste!

Today was #HomeMadeDogFood day. My recipe makes about 12 days' supply. #Rufus has been eating home made since he was a little puppy. Roughly 2/3 chicken, 1/3 vegetables plus rice cooked in the chicken broth. No toxic & disgusting stuff like factory made, no dog food recalls. #dogsky
