Edge of Darkness The greatest five-hours of television drama ever produced is one reason I spent 20 years as investigative journalist and conspiracy researcher. This genre-transcending, multi-layered masterpiece is so ridiculously rich in content and meaning it also motivated in other directions. If caught, I’d have cited it when defending my pre-9/11 illegal exploring of Tube ghost stations and government tunnels under Whitehall. For Hookland, I will cite its heady mix of magic realism and parapolitics. Its glorious blurred border storytelling where we don’t know if the hero is having a breakdown due to grief and haunting guilt of possible incest or because his dead daughter is actually talking to him. The revelation that tales about nuclear paranoia, fanatical Thatcherism and Lovelock’s Daisyworld could simultaneously be about the land itself picking mythic champions, the deeps of human grief, remains a key Hookland attitude.
You know how I feel about Edge of Darkness, foundational Hookland. I think it needs another #HookWatch soon. Possibly even transcribe my Troy Kennedy Martin interview.
