I've always been far more interested in confusing the bejesus out of my poor Nikon, in this case a 7100 that I quickly moved past for its lack of speed. I haven't looked at this shoot for YEARS because the combination of the soft Lensbaby, incredibly high contrast and general darkness gave the camera fits and resulted in mostly-blurry images that generally disappointed me immensely. But there are more than a few keepers. Hailey was, per usual, absolutely riveting as she took my props and ran with them into an alternate universe. Her ability to find unexpected corners of reality to play inside really shaped how I envision the role of the art model and my own specific goals for photography itself. I feel like I owe the better parts of my so-called career to her input and influence. I constantly debate the cancellation of my Adobe subscription. I feel like Adobe is generally evil and I'm not particularly enthralled with their direction as a company. HOWEVER....I really like Lightroom CC and its UI and my halting forays into trying to learn other interfaces have been quite frustrating. I don't believe I have an overly-technical brain and most of these platforms seem to be built on a 40-year-old original Photoshop concept. Say what you will about the Creative Cloud experience, Adobe has crafted a good UI for us non-computer-types. Also at this point I feel pretty damned clever and am having a great time revisiting YEARS of archives and finding things that might have potential. This image is a great example -- is it shit or art? Can't say, that determination is up to you. But I think it sparks questions and that's what I really want.
The idea of body jewelry is a bit of glam/erotica but I would like to think that we moved well past that with this shoot. Is she beautiful? Of course. Is she a mystery? I certainly hope so. In a perfect world, this shot asks more questions than it answers, cloaking beauty in a bit of shadow to allow your imagination and experiences to fill in a new story. I've been bombarded with "beautiful girl in suggestive pose" work by the algorithms lately and I certainly have an appreciation for the genre as a guy. I see far less work that has anything interesting to communicate. There are a few models currently working who routinely transcend beauty to supply a story beyond t&a but the incredible flood of well-shot, perfectly-composed and typically-big-boobed neo-erotica is overwhelming. I should note, too, that there are a handful of photographers whose work I regularly see who resist the obvious and I really appreciate them. Somehow they always seem to wind up working with the more-innovative models, too....coincidence? Or conspiracy? LOL.
I don't recall seeing this image the first time I looked through these but it really jumped out this time. The shadowing, the building and the reflection all combine in a way that was immediately striking. Hailey looks ready to leap, to catch herself, to fall through the city, to fly. Kinda makes me want to find this listing again and see if I can't rent the room and play with this all over again but my experience has been that lightning rarely strikes twice. As much as I want to "improve" this stuff....it might have been perfect the way it is and I should move on to the next stupid idea and see what we can pull out of it, giggling and drinking red wine through the night.
