Illustration of a lesbian couple in front of concrete stairs, a stained glass window, and big lavender flowers. Words say "C&A" and "Teacher version".
Now that you may have read the short story, let's take a look at what language and meaning can be noticed in each part, so teachers can use for activities and discussion.

Coral & Athelia, a short queer story - revisited through a teacher's (and materials writers) eyes
#HowToInclusive #QueerInELT
This is my first substack post. It feels like the good ole days of blogging, but on contemporary topics. π In this one, you can read the short story, how it arose from an old photo of my and my grandma, and why I used it in a research chapter on queering coursebook material. #HowToInclusive
Brown/grey blended background with an illustrated well-dressed female couple and the words C&A, Part 5 in white font
Brown/grey blended background. White font say "Part 5 / Now in their 70s, Coral and Athelia are finally here at the community centre, revisiting where it all began. Their lives hold many ups and downs, but they are proud that they persisted through prejudice and lived their lives authentically, yet safely. After exchanging vows that they collaborated on, they also exchange rings. Then they sweetly kiss. The organ plays! Cheers start loudly! Photos are taken! Coral's grand nibling, Joshua, offers his arms for these now legal partners so they can walk back down the aisle together. Family and friends begin throwing dried lavender bits instead of rice at the newlywed coupleβa present from their friend Taslim, who always outdoes herself. Once outside, Athelia's eyes become misty. They walk down the steps carefully together, arms interlocked. Coral and Athelia pause, breathe deeply, and feel both disbelief and relief overcome them. This moment symbolizes a lifetime of subverting social norms. Athelia smiles and throws a piece of dried lavender at Coralβs face. They laugh."

Colour splashes of paint in the background underly three stylised white phrases: 1. Queer stories belong in our world. 2. Queer people exist in all spaces. 3. Queer pedagogy benefits everyone.
Let 2025 be the year ELT embraces queerness. I'll help.
