L’occhio attento di Hubble rivela sottili variazioni di colore in tutta la galassia. Il centro pallido e luminoso è dominato da stelle più antiche, mentre deboli regioni bluastre nel disco circostante tracciano aree di formazione stellare più recente. Filamenti di polvere attraversano la struttura della galassia, oscurando delicatamente la luce e delineando zone ricche di gas molecolare, dove è probabile che si formino nuove stelle. Al centro della galassia, un evidente bagliore bianco sovrasta la luce stellare circostante. Si tratta della radiazione emessa dal nucleo galattico attivo (AGN) di IC 486, alimentato da un buco nero supermassiccio con una massa superiore a 100 milioni di volte quella del Sole. Ogni galassia sufficientemente grande ospita un buco nero supermassiccio al proprio centro, ma alcuni di questi sono particolarmente voraci, attirando enormi quantità di gas e polvere in dischi di accrescimento vorticosi dai quali si nutrono. Il calore intenso generato dal materiale in orbita produce radiazioni potentissime, fino ai raggi X, che possono superare in luminosità l’intera galassia. In questi casi, la galassia è definita attiva, con un AGN al suo centro.
