The cover jacket is a two color (red and white) of fascists marching through the streets of a city. Text: Title: The City Without Jews: A Novel of Our Time Author: Hugo Bettauer [1872-1925] <snip> Summary: originally published in 1922 (see cover below) and basis for the 1924 film of the same name, the novel was written as a satirical response to the rampant antisemitism in Austria during the 1920s. The characters of the book are based on real political figures and not in a subtle way either. The story opens with a new law being passed forcing all Jews to leave Austria. Though the rest of the population is initially enthusiastic about the event, once the Jews are expelled the country begins to go into a social and economic decline. The book was not well received in Austria and in 1925 National Socialist Otto Rothstock shot and killed Bettauer. He served only 18 months in prison and upon his release resumed his position in the Nazi Party, both a wealthy man and a national hero.
After perusing Future/Past by #JImEmerson, TIL why many #SF and #Fantasy silent films are considered lost, about the stinginess of #HugoGernsback, and the Austrian SF writer who was assassinated by a Nazi for writing a book satirizing the Nazi antisemitism. (see photo below)
