Thinking about villains today for the Chingu Challenge got me thinking about how many of the kdramas I watch feature no real villain. The characters are their own worst enemies. That is certainly true for #Hwayugi. Nobody hurts Son Oh-gong more than himself.

Cha Seung Won as Ma Wang in Hwayugi. His hair is gelled back. He wears a mustache and a lot of foundation so that his skin looks plastic. He is wearing a suit and a coat with a fur collar. His expression is that of getting ready to yell at an underling.

I’m rewatching #Hwayugi and it has become clear that #ChaSeungWon is one of those actors that I really like in serious roles, but hate in comedic roles. #KimWonHae is another.

It’s loosely based on Journey to the West, which is also messy and has so many characters.

#Hwayugi is also the quintessential Hong Sisters drama. Their schtick doesn’t always work for me, but this drama checked all the boxes.

I also found in my notes from 2020 that after dropping #Hwayugi, I immediately started another #LeeSeungGi kdrama, #TheKing2Hearts, which I liked a lot.

#Hwayugi has a LOT of characters and it’s kind of a mess in the beginning. I got whiplash from the child actress to the adult, singing competition scenes, the ice cream shop, exorcisms, real estate… I couldn’t figure out the main plot. Now that I’m a kdrama veteran, this is easier to parse.

As I’m rewatching #Hwayugi, the ghosts and CGI are reminding me of #HotelDelLuna, which I recently dropped. So I looked to see if they share a director?

Aha! These are both Hong Sisters kdramas! That explains so much 🤦‍♀️

I don’t usually rewatch, but I decided to rewatch #Hwayugi #KoreanOdyssey this week.

I last watched this in 2020. It was one of my first kdramas. I didn’t finish it then.

Only watching #JustBetweenLovers and #IAmNotARobot right now—can’t remember the last time I was watching so few shows. Debating if I should start #Hwayugi...is it good?

I’m enjoying the plot of #Hwayugi so far. Also, enjoying the characters: funny, good/bad, and sad/serious.

Translating #Hwayugi as FUNKEY, Monkey being an English title coined for the novel in 1942, might aid promotion of it to a wider circle.
