I’m currently bawling at an episode of “My Hero Academia.” It’s not even a sad episode, I’m crying because of how much the protag’s friends care about him. I mean it, almost any strong emotion will make me cry. #Autistic #Hyperempathy

In last week’s Spirituality webinar, there was a brief discussion in the chat box between a Muslim and Christian Autistic, when the topic of Theory of Mind came up in the presentation. It is a myth that Autistic people have a deficiency in conceptualisation beyond concrete reality and their own selves. For many of us, we go beyond the typical conceptualisation of this world and feel a deeper connection with the Unseen, the Ghaib. Both people agreed that our hyper-empathy characteristic is an explanation to this enhanced relevance of spirituality to our lives. Once I understood the tafsir, explanations, of the chapters of the Quran, the words came alive in my mind and provoked very strong emotions to the point of overwhelm. During prayer, remembrance, or recitation, when we zone into our spiritual selves, it is very easy to feel isolated from this world. It’s like we don’t belong to this Realm- Autistics from all faiths and none will resonate with this! During Ramadan, Autistic Muslims who experience hyper-empathy can feel this isolation from this world heightened. We typically feel very deeply in every emotion and experience. When an autistic person feels overwhelmed by observing distress in others, this is often referred to as hyper-empathy. This heightened sensitivity can create challenges in differentiating their feelings from those of others, resulting in emotional overload.
