My third pregnancy, I had #hyperemesis so badly I lost 20+ lbs while pregnant. I was being kept alive by IV fluids. I kept down food once a week. I was in Level 3 starvation (muscle breakdown) for about three months, and may have been early Level 4. Many people in Gaza are at Level 5, near death.

What is it? A blood clot can occur anywhere in the body, but are most common in the veins in the legs or pelvis (Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT). If a clot forms in - or travels to - essential parts of the body like the lungs, heart, or brain, they can be life-threatening. In pregnancy and the six weeks afterwards, the risk of blood clots is increased for everyone: approx 1 in 1000 women. It is preventable and treatable, but in the UK & Ireland it is the most common cause of death in pregnancy and postnatally.
Why would HG increase my risk? People who get blood clots usually have multiple risk factors. Pregnancy is one. Two others are dehydration and immobilisation (in bed for 3+ days). If you have HG and it is not well-treated, you can easily become dehydrated, and some of us are bedbound for days, weeks, or months. Other risk factors can include: - smoking, being over 35, a high BMI - family/personal history of blood clots or clotting disorders - recent surgery including c-section - recent Covid19 infection - varicose veins
What are the symptoms? Get emergency medical help if you notice any of the following: Swelling or pain in your leg, arm, or pelvis (usually on one side) Warmth or redness in your leg or arm Shortness of breath or rapid breathing Chest pain (particularly when breathing deeply) Coughing or coughing up blood. Severe headache or blurred vision Thrombosis Ireland logo
HG is tough enough and we don't want to scare anyone. But it's important to know that HG increases your risks of other conditions in pregnancy.. first up, blood clots (thrombosis).
