omg I figured out a horrible kludge involving multiple audio interfaces and MIDI over 5-pin DIN. I had to disassemble my little music bench to do it. I hate it.

But I will record the video after lunch.

I prepped to do a video on sound design in #Hyphasia but rtpMIDI has decided to completely stop working today. None of the restart/reboot rituals are working either.

So I guess I'm fighting that today. Maybe I'll fix something in time to still record. Hopefully I'm not in a Mood after this.

I've been doing quality of life stuff on #Hyphasia today. Reset (to default) buttons. UI fixes. Tooltip improvements.

I think I'm going to do a longer video this weekend exploring sound design with the instrument.

Today I mostly worked on sound design options and parameters. The big one I finished is log-frequency combs for the inharmonic emitters. It's a subtle difference, but it definitely changes the sound as you walk over the octaves.

With the "local time" parameter ticked, the modulation timeline is per-note instead of shared globally. This is something like an LFO retrigger, but there's infinite polyphony and each note already owns its LFOs, so it's just about frame of reference.

I have MIDI beat/tempo sync working!

#Hyphasia doesn't track time in the MIDI/plugin layer, but the synth core. Musical and "real" time are tied together.

So I use a PLL to sync the internal quarter-note to MIDI. Works much better than I expected for a first pass.

Working on MIDI sync / beat lock right now. I've gotta handle so many different modes and sources. Trying to do as much automatically/universally as I can, but I'm afraid it's gonna wind up with user options.

Updated the input zone UI to be a lot more compact and friendly. It now uses standard note names/ranges instead of opaque numbers. Plus it takes up way less vertical space in the UI. I also moved it up next to the "active" checkbox. So much cleaner.

Modulation works pretty nice. This is just mod wheel on the comb stride parameter.

MusiKraken is a really, really nice expressive control for Hyphasia. I'm using it to prototype the built-in performance interface I'll use for the iPad app.

MusiKraken is pretty awesome with #Hyphasia.

I have it tracking my hand with the camera, and then I have "openness" of the hand sending the sostenuto pedal. Y finger slide on the keyboard is polyphonic aftertouch (or MPE pressure) for live volume.

This is really controllable, natural polyphony.

Turns out my KeyStep has pretty unexpressive aftertouch.

Got MusiKraken for iPad. This is super nice for testing because I can configure the controller to send exactly what I want.

Today's just been about getting back in the groove. I cleaned up some code so I can add the rest of the non-CC MIDI modulation sources (aftertouch, pressure, etc.). I also left hooks for the breath control mode I'll add at some point.

One of the positive things from the last few weeks of deep audio work is that I'm pretty confident the core audio engine is Basically Done. It cannot become more expressive without violating the laws that mathematically stabilize it.

I've mostly spent today stripping code out of #Hyphasia. Getting back to a baseline to continue work.

As the instrument as revealed its soul to me, I've learned what I need to strip away. I know the strengths of this instrument, and how to trade them differently for the next synth.

During early phase sculpture synthesis algorithm design, the piano was my functional benchmark. By that metric, I have succeeded. It can already do everything a piano can and more.

Hyphasia is not in bad company for having the same limitation as a piano.

After almost a month of math and existential despair, I have to accept that live pitch bend is not physically compatible with polyphony in #Hyphasia.

No matter how I run the math, there is always one case where it will cause audio distortion: simultaneously bending some notes up and some down.
