Been getting a new blog in place to keep thoughts in order as I stop being on market.
Collecting writings from elsewhere.
I wanted to revisit this piece given the recent end of #iaem2024. There's so little work being done in the unsexy part of tech adoption.

So now a week or so out from #IAEM2024, I can start sorting through thoughts.
I’ve spent time in and around emerging technology for disaster. It honestly hasn’t changed in maybe 30 years.
Better looking, but often just as fragile, if not more so.
There is still no roadmap to integration.
Gray, brisk, and blustery but it’s good to be home in Harrisburg PA after a great but exhausting week at tge #IAEM2024 conference in Colorado. Time zone difference and packed conference schedule = @juliemason.bsky.social withdrawal. Missed my afternoon sanity check!
One thing that came out of #iaem2024 for me is that i've been on the fence about doing a HAM/ARES and computing project for HCI. After hearing about all the ways HAM is being used now to fill instrumentation gaps, there's a lot of fun to be had there.
Now to get license, talk to the space station.
Unlike generic emergency management tools, IncidentHQ integrates seamlessly with healthcare protocols, meeting FEMA, CMS,TJC, DNV, and AAAHC. Start enhancing your emergency preparedness today with our cost-effective solution.

Our last #iaem2024 CTC Tech Talk is from Suzanne Frew about Democratizing AI for Whole Community.
She tells me she is just starting to explore this topic and it’s neat to see someone critical or avoidant of technology looking at it from a prosocial angle.
“Cultural competency” in AI. Difficult.
For example, the PIOs I’ve talked to at #iaem2024 will often talk about not being fully able to engage with digital tools.
This sort of approach can help comms during disaster, but also representations of data, situations, and better relations to the media (online, print, and broadcast).
A thing I’ve learned at #iaem2024 is the HSEEP is going to change to promote more game-focused knowledge.
Lenora here is finishing her EeD in this space and is working to help create pathways for professionalization which are super important for a field so scattered.
Next up at the CTC at #iaem2024 is Lenora Borchardt talking about tech in training exercises.
This goes along with the group that has been a bit critical of the core competencies of EM.
Her approach to teaching the HSEEP is so fascinating. Please find a reason to talk to her about it.
It’s always good to understand how our emergency management colleagues work internationally. #IAEM2024 #IAEM24 #SaudiAramco
First #iaem2024 presentation at the CTC (booth 411) is @scba.bsky.social discussing the vulnerabilities of our critical infrastructure from a technology perspective.
Volt Typhoon is scary.
Last day of #iaem2024. At the Donald Lumpkins Crisis Technology Lounge we got talks on:
- Democratizing AI for whole community inclusion,
- Volt Typhoon, and
- use of Tech in Training and Exercises.
Stop on by booth 411 for our schedule!
When your favorite things collide - disaster management and animal welfare.

Great bunch of emergency management professionals! Was able to catch up with LaSandra Brown after 5 years. Met Chelsia Elmore, CEM and Waheeda Yousofzoy, MPS, CEM. Looking forward to helping out the Texas Women in Homeland Security.

Arthur is back to talk about AI Battle Management Software. What does this have to do with #emergencymanagement and #iaem2024?
Well, using older XR table displays with AI integrated, we can visualize a response in real time and get suggestions for optimization, efficiency, and potential breakages.
Four presenters teaching about how to effectively communicate for all populations including those with access and functional needs.
Jeannette Sutton, Manny Centeno, and Eddie Bertola posing outside the FEMA IPAWS booth in the convention hall.
Jeannette Sutton and Dr Roni Frazier at the IPAWS booth.
An IPAWS employee teaching about the Message Design Dashboard in the IPAWS booth.
#IAEM2024 had horrible cell reception in the entire venue so I missed out on live posts. But here’s a few photos from the event
At #iaem2024, @scba.bsky.social will be presenting in Center North.
"What's All the Fuss about AI? Getting beyond HAL to Something Actually Useful"
Should be fantastic!
Also, Sarah is about to defend her dissertation on the same topic. (it is very good).
Please celebrate her nearly Dr. Status!

Next up is Arthur Simenetal who has presented a check to the #iaem2024 scholarship fund.
He will now talk about his forthcoming board game for emergency managers.

At #iaem2024, Mary Jo Nevins is giving our first tech talk about the core competencies emergency management often uses.
One suggestion her group of practitioners has is to actually talk to them about what competencies matter to practice.
The lack of alignment is often a source of trouble.
Heading to #iaem2024 to prep the Crisis Technology Center.
We focus on, “what is tech in em even?” AI has distracted it.
To colleagues in academia and EM:
We have so much opportunity to do good yet we spend it lamenting that we can’t just have what we want easily.
We gotta work harder to listen.
Thank you! I’ll do a live-sky from #IAEM2024 tomorrow.
At my airbnb for #iaem2024. Altitude headache forming….but I want to hear about what made this end up being the only thing in the fridge.
Hello there! #IAEM2024
Heading to #iaem2024 in Colorado Springs. Will be basically stationed at the Emerging Technology Booth or the Doc Lumpkins Crisis Technology Center.
We'll have a number of journal articles from #emergencymanagement practitioners as they try and get heard by #academicsky who continue to fail them.
Early morning flight to Colorado to attend #iaem2024. If you’re planning to be there and want to talk about alerts and warnings, look for me!
