Despite significant progress in neuroimaging, many brain processes remain poorly understood. 
Ultra-high-field (UHF) MRI offers supra-linear gains in SNR, which can be invested to achieve unprecedented spatial resolution, enabling the visualization of smaller anatomical features, such as cortical layers and subcortical nuclei. 
By uncovering these features and processes, UHF MRI could contribute to a better understanding of the physiopathology of several neurological disorders, and could help identify related biomarkers, leading to more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatments. Reaching the “mesoscopic” scale in imaging can help bridge the gap between molecular processes at the cellular level and whole-brain activity.

After nearly 20 years of research and development, the 132-ton 11.7T magnet, with its imaging equipment, delivered its first images in 2021. The field homogeneity and temporal stability constraints for MRI were met thanks to a careful design of the magnet. 
The core of the Iseult MRI system is an actively shielded niobium-titanium (NbTi) magnet cooled with a superfluid helium (He) cryostable bath at 1.8 kelvin, providing a homogeneous magnetic field within a 90 cm warm bore, operated in driven mode. A multi-strand wire magnet design was chosen to reduce the inductance of the main superconducting coil and thus reduce the maximum voltage induced in case of quench. The magnet consists of 170 double pancake wires, with about 250 superconductive joints.
