Yesterday, I gave a talk to the #ISKOUK Conference, presenting the status quo and challenges of creating Knowledge Organization Systems of Research Fields.

This slide summarises what I learned during these years in trying to use AI to generate them.

It's cool, it's artistic, but bloody hard!

Maybe we cannot 'solve' the problem of different representations of communities. It is more of a process (e.g. by participatory governance). Otherwise we could be guilty of erasure of other experience. It is difficult and could be uncomfortable. Joseph Busch at the #ISKOUK 2025 Conference.

Terminology is used in specific context. Participatory governance - include the communities that are being described by those systems - to more fairly represent communities. Julaine Clunis at the #ISKOUK 2025 Conference

Very interested to hear about Biases in KOSs in Julaine Clunis' talk at the #ISKOUK 2025 Conference. This is a real problem when it comes to algorithmic bias.

At the conference, @angelosalatino.bsky.social reviewed existing KOSs for academic disciplines and discussed how AI can help build them.
He asked: How can we integrate existing KOSs of research fields?
It's an important question for both KO and scientometrics.

Potemkin Understanding in Large Language Models Large language models (LLMs) are regularly evaluated using benchmark datasets. But what justifies making inferences about an LLM's capabilities based on its answers to a curated set of questions? This...

At the conference, Ronald Siebes discussed the limitations of LLMs. They can explain various issues well but often struggle to apply this knowledge. He emphasized the important role of symbolic AI in improving their performance. See also:

@gnoli.eu chaired the first session of the #ISKOUK 2025 Conference. An emerging theme seems to be about the use of AI to enhance indexing of resources, but with human oversight. We do not seem to be yet at the stage where AI generated indexing or metadata is totally reliable.
