Open Sequence: An Introduction by Thomas Kluge and Christoph Forman (Siemens Healthineers, Erlangen, Germany)

Open innovation and reproducible research have become increasingly important in the research community.
In MRI image reconstruction, the introduction of the ISMRMRD format marked a major step toward vendor-independent standards for storing and transferring MRI raw data.
Reconstruction algorithms supporting this format can be distributed, enabling reproduction of results and application to new data. This can be performed offline for research purposes. On MAGNETOM scanners from Siemens Healthineers, these algorithms can be integrated into the clinical workflow at the scanner using containers and the Open Recon interface.

However, in the area of MR sequence development, many existing frameworks, while claiming vendor-independence, still rely on vendor-specific adapter modules. These are deeply embedded in the vendor’s scanner control software and must be adapted and re-released for each software update – creating significant work for both developers and users.

To overcome these limitations and to fully support reproducible research, a new software-version- and programming-language-independent interface for data acquisition on MAGNETOM scanners was introduced at #ISMRM25. It will be released with the Open Sequence product on MAGNETOM scanners and will provide all necessary interfaces to develop an application for MR data acquisition.

The Open Sequence interface enables sequence development independent of the software version of the MR scanner. A wide range of development and deployment opportunities are enabled. Using established sequence development environments like gammaSTAR and Pulseq with the Open Sequence interface further supports open innovation and reproducible research.
Future versions will focus on enabling real-time MR applications and simplifying MR sequence development.
