Gordon van Welie Steps Down as ISO New England CEO After Three Decades of Leadership Gordon van Welie, long-time CEO of ISO New England, is set to retire at the end of the month after nearly two decades leading the organization responsible for New England's power grid. As he prepares to hand over the reins to COO Vamsi Chadalavada, van Welie has overseen significant changes to the region's electric grid, including the implementation of a capacity market designed to incentivize power plant availability during periods of high demand. With his departure comes anticipation for major updates to the market system that Chadalavada will be tasked with enacting, and van Welie himself has expressed enthusiasm about remaining connected to the industry, citing the need to balance personal life with continued engagement.

Tuesday's Intense Heat Strains Massachusetts Electrical Grid, Leaving Thousands Without Power Tuesday’s intense heat significantly strained the electrical grid in Massachusetts, leaving thousands without power. Eversource reported approximately 13,000 customers experienced outages due to the extreme temperatures. Since Monday, Eversource crews have restored power to roughly 28,000 customers, with over 5,000 restorations occurring overnight. Currently, about 800 customers remain without power, concentrated in the Metro Boston area due to the extensive underground infrastructure. While not all outages were directly attributable to the heat, Eversource acknowledged it placed considerable stress on the system. System demand reached 92% of ISO New England’s historical peak, a level not seen since 2010. Demand has since decreased, and the grid is being closely monitored. Eversource has activated its Emergency Response Plan, utilizing both internal and external resources to ensure system reliability. Crews are prepared for rapid response, and system operators are actively managing the grid. National Grid also reported limited outages on Tuesday, with only 125 customers affected as of Wednesday afternoon. National Grid stated its electric system is operating normally and is prepared for the anticipated high energy demand due to the heat and humidity. The company is in close contact with ISO-NE and other utilities and is actively monitoring conditions.
