HOW WIDESPREAD IS SEXUAL ABUSE AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE ? “A lot of the violence abuse and harm is not reported, and the statistics, show only the tip of the iceberg. Here are some of the statistics that tell us about the size and impact of the problem in our communities. Almost 4 in 5 victims of sexual offences, recorded by PSNI in 2022/23, where the gender of the victim was known, were female. (PSNI 2023) 75% of girls experience street harassment at least once in their lifetime 1 in 2 girls, aged 16 have received an unwanted intimate photo/video at least once in their lifetime. (YLT 2022)” https://www.executiveoffice-ni.gov.uk/sites/default/files/publications/execoffice/action-plan.pdf

How can we all support victims and survivors of sexual violence and sexual abuse? Believe what they're saying and tell them this. Listen to the person, but don't ask for details of the assault. Offer practical support, such as asking them if they would like you to go with them to appointments. Respect their decisions – for example, whether or not they want to report the assault to the police. Bear in mind they might not want to be touched. Even a hug might upset them, so ask first. If you're in a sexual relationship with them, be aware that sex might be frightening, and don't put pressure on them to have sex. Don't tell them to forget about the assault. It will take time for them to deal with their feelings and emotions. You can help by listening and being patient. #ItsNotOK Adapted from https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/sexual-health/help-after-rape-and-sexual-assault/

No victim or survivor of sexual violence and abuse should be asked to engage with a system does not prioritise them.
There needs to be changes, to avoid further traumatisation, and for justice to be served.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MYTHS ABOUT SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ABUSE? Myths are claims that too often put the blame for an assault onto the victim and away from the perpetrator. “The woman was wearing a short skirt; she was asking for it.” “Men cannot be sexually assaulted by women.” “They consented to kissing and touching which means there was consent for sex.” Regardless of what someone is wearing, where they were or the amount of alcohol they consumed – sexual assault and violence are never the victim’s fault. Regardless of what someone is wearing, where they were or the amount of alcohol they consumed– sexual assault and violence are never the victim’s fault. The blame completely lies on the perpetrator and they are responsible for their actions.

This Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week, we restate our concerns about self-swab ‘rape kits’.
Survivors need support from trained professionals—not DIY kits that risk care and justice.

WHO EXPERIENCES SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND ABUSE? Anyone can experience sexual violence and abuse - regardless of their age, gender, sexual orientation, ability or any other characteristic. No matter who experiences this harm, it is never their fault. While sexual violence and abuse can happen to anyone, women and girls are disproportionately impacted. ‘Estimates published by WHO indicate that globally about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.’ https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/violence-against-women
