The play, in my view, works better because their aspects of it you don't grasp the first time through, not worse. This literary fantasy I've just described is the #icebergtheory in action, as I see it anyway...

AANYWAY. I'd been thinking lately that one of the points I wanted to make here was; #IcebergTheory = nothing more or less than great writing, bcs great writers have a way of omitting everything that's not necessary. Well, most of the ones I love do, anyway. I guess Joyce sometimes fails this test.

We are now up to page 25 on Todd Field's game-changing #IcebergTheory masterpiece of a screenplay for the Cate Blanchett film TAR. I thought this might be an appropriate time to take stock of all the (likely or definitive) lies our protagonist has told, since that's one of the underlying themes.

A writer deploying #IcebergTheory, however, *adds* emotional impact by *omitting* material. So there's the option of having A tell a lie to B that is ONLY RECOGNIZABLE AS A LIE ON A SECOND OR SUBSEQUENT VIEWING ... or (get ready) NOT DEFINITIVELY CONFIRMABLE AS A LIE AT ALL.

In (my experience of) writing that does NOT observe (what I call the) #IcebergTheory aesthetic, the most common way to depict the dramatically powerful phenomenon of Character A lying to Character B is to make sure the reader/viewer knows A is lying--either before or immediately following the lie.

Watching/rewatching #TARFilm means opening yourself up to the possibility you may've been wrong abt earlier assumptions. Kind of like life. (But I would submit that 1 of the major reasons so many people, me included, initially assumed this story must be based on real life was Todd Field's masterful deployment of Ernest #Hemingway 's #IcebergTheory. There is something about this way of writing that evokes the complexities of real life.)
