Moofie was so well behaved for her shearing this morning and her wool was as dreamy as I thought it would be. A beautiful long and soft fleece.

My pretty Little Cow this morning before I went to work. She loves posing for the camera.

Proud Mo llama with his best ewe lamb friend Little Cow at breakfast this morning. He gave her a little kiss as they shared their hay.

Sweet Moofie, an Icelandic ewe lamb born last spring, posing this morning. My lens was a little bit dirty so it has a filtered effect. When I have the hood up on my heavy coat, they are a little wary of me so she didn’t want to come over.

Motley Crewe this morning. Should make it an album cover.

Checking in on Little Cow yesterday. She had a bit of a limp after I was away for an hour. I think she’s fine. Nothing obvious.

I’ve been working on Moo-flon to get her more comfortable w/ affection & handling. She only likes to be touched in certain places. Not on the side or the side of her face. More on her sternum. I’m encouraged she lets me touch her at all since Icelandic sheep are a primitive breed. #icelandicsheep
Little Cow makes a cameo yesterday morning. She’s such an affectionate, sweet, silly girl. Plus, she’s a chatterbox!

Four curious sheep looking at the camera.
These sheep are not just cute, but they are also very curious.

A friendly black and white sheep sticking its head through a barbed wire fence.
Three sheep, one white and two black and white, pose for the camera with the sea in the background.
Instead of Caturday, I'm doing sheep Saturday in honour of my grandfather, who loved taking pictures of sheep.

Weatherproof is the word that comes to mind when gazing upon these mounds of wool. #icelandicsheep It was 42°F and he's actually at the beach.

A woolly welcoming committee
Icelandic sheep roam free in rugged summer landscapes, double-coated for warmth, on windswept islands they've called home since Viking times.

OMG! MooMou (middle) always raises the biggest and fastest growing lambs. Her twins here are only 52 days old! #IcelandicSheep
An older Icelandic ewe stands with her eyes half-closed as the shepherd plucks at loose wool on the sheep's neck. The ewe is a pale golden color and has large horns that curve back over her ears. It's a cloudy day, and the grass and trees in the background are vivid green.
Another view of the same ewe, with the shepherd holding a little tuft of wool in her hand. The sheep is naturally shedding the remnants of last year's fleece, and the shepherd is helping the process along, a practice called "rooing." This ewe, Iris, seems to find the process enjoyable, and willingly stands still while the shepherd tidies up her coat.
This is Iris' fleece, after skirting and washing.
A white sheep takes hold of the shepherd's scarf and pulls it with his teeth. This is Peter, a Shetland x BFL wether, and he is reminding me that it is time for breakfast. Now.
Here's Iris, the sheep I was rooing recently. We're still getting the last of her old wool plucked off (she seems to love this). And a picture of her fleece, which I washed a few days ago.
And Peter, reminding me it's time for breakfast.

Barn camera view of a cluttered feed room. In foreground, a skinny old ewe gets extra breakfast. In center of frame, the shepherdess couches alongside a light-colored, horned Icelandic ewe, tidying up her coat with scissors and by "rooing," pulling off the remnants of last year's loose wool as it is naturally shed.
Barn cam caught me giving Iris a post-shearing cleanup. She's Icelandic, so has a natural wool break in springtime. Sing to "row, row, row, your boat":
"Roo, roo, roo your ewe,
on a day in May,
Wooly, wooly, wooly, wooly,
Old wool's gone away."

Two little lambs running in a field.
My grandmother never could understand why my grandfather insisted on taking this many photos of sheep but I quite like them.

An Icelandic sheep with two lambs.
I wanted to continue the theme of posting my grandfather's slides on Saturdays a little while longer. So in this special edition of Caturday, instead of posting his cat photos since I ran out of those, here are some sheep.

Introducing May, on the left, and her brother, Dagur (Icelandic for "Day"). Both about 8lbs. Both needed our assistance entering the world.

Vindljóni’s name means Father of Winter. We call him Vinnie 😉 Vinnie’s white fleece is actually a pattern that hides his color. He is almost certainly black, and has a second pattern that could be badgerface or solid.

Joyous! #grateful #Icelandicsheep
We welcomed our first lambs a couple days ago, and after some bonding time with mom Karma, they got to come out and meet the rest of the ewe crew! Our other 3 are expecting to lamb any day now, so these babies will soon have lots of friends to play with!
