In order to understand the complex landscape of digital games, Paul also has had to use diverse research methods and to promote their adoption in HCI. As a result he has written two books Research Methods for HCI and Doing Better Statistics in HCI.

Paul is part of the Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence (iGGi) Centre for Doctoral training, which is the world's largest PhD research programme focused on games research. Paul designed the formal training programme for the programme, managing its implementation across three institutions.
