Ithete envisions model ministry and industrial hub for Namibia Deputy prime minister and minister of industries, mines and energy Natangwe Ithete has lauded the ministry’s staff for their dedication and crucial contributions to national progress. Ithete did so while addressing staff members from regional offices in the Oshana, Oshikoto, Omusati, Ohangwena, Kunene, Kavango East and West and Zambezi regions at Ongwediva on Friday. While acknowledging past achievements, Ithete said substantial work remains. He laid out his vision to transform the ministry into a model of public service, where citizens’ needs are met with efficiency and satisfaction. He also articulated a strong ambition to industrialise Namibia, positioning it as Africa’s manufacturing base through value addition to local resources and the creation of jobs via local content and beneficiation. “Industrial development is one of the key components of a truly inclusive economy,” Ithete said, emphasising that “a strong industrial sector, with competitive manufacturing, agro-processing, and value chain integration is the backbone of long-term growth, self-sufficiency, and job creation”. He said the vision is to scale up government support for industrial parks, special economic zones, and local manufacturing hubs, especially in regions with a high unemployment rate. Ithete said the ministry will work with stakeholders to ensure their industrial policies are practical and aligned with private sector needs. He said a thriving Namibian industry also means empowering small and medium enterprises with access to finance, affordable energy, simplified regulations, and market access. “Let us therefore raise awareness and sensitise our people to leverage on regional trade agreements, such as the Southern African Customs Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area for Namibian-made products to compete in regional and international markets,” he said. Ithete called on Namibians to work on making ‘Made in Namibia’ not just a slogan, but a mark of quality and pride.
