Perhaps that’s why we gravitate to books so much: For a moment, we touch another mind and know that we're not alone in our thoughts, feelings, or experiences, and we do so knowing we're safe from ridicule, dismissal, and misunderstanding.

Man’s hubris presumes to invent the divine while being unable to create a maggot. Still, this is also a testament to the brilliance of human imagination: We may be incapable of divine creation, but our minds can conjure marvels.

It’s so important not to be constrained by genre definitions! Any of Pratchett's books would be instantly kneecapped, if not rendered unreadable, were it purely comedic or dramatic, purely high fantasy or science fiction.

Accepting information or argumentation uncritically is incredibly dangerous; that’s why thinking, knowing how to think, and practicing thought are important.

Kindness doesn't require care for its object, while actions for the good of the beloved may seem unkind in the moment. A child may be angry when a knife is taken from it, but nobody would call it an act of love to allow the child to keep the knife.

Heavily codified genre work has its place, but the best works invert, subvert, and reclaim the tropes of their genre to make something new, using tropes not because they’re expected but because they’re best for the story in that moment.

This is not to say that stories need no internal consistency, but that consistency may bear no resemblance to the real world. There are no rules until the castle is built and generates its own laws of physics.

Despair and resignation are static, and one can adjust to them, at least for a time. Hope can be cruel in its ever-changing persistence.

Of course, this does not preclude the possibility of seeking one’s own good at the expense of others through acts that one recognizes as evil.

The prevalence of internet trolls simultaneously confirms this observation and gives us cause for great lamentation as to the state of humanity.

I have a soft spot for anything that personifies Death, a personality quirk that I lay squarely at the feet of Terry Pratchett. Combine that with a slightly sinister call to make the most of life, and I have my new favorite motivational poster!

Our dignity is not worth nearly as much as we think; play games, dress up, laugh, eat, be excited, and make a fool of yourself. It’s allowed, at this time of year, more than ever.

This line is fun because it looks motivational, but in the book, it’s a pure statement of logic: Stay out here and die now, or go into this forbidden room and maybe be killed later. A simple phrase or maxim can be toyed with so much based on context!

The path of least resistance is always most favored, but it is rarely the most fulfilling. Even so, music, joy, soul, creative work, and passion are difficult in their various ways, and very rarely lead to wealth, stability, or safety.

Some things are better delayed than rushed. There's a push to do and see ten different things in one day simply because you're in the area, but sometimes it's better to see one thing properly than to survey a dozen things imperfectly.

I do enjoy coming across historical gems like this. It demonstrates that the elevation of opinion to the status of a faith and the regarding of dissent as blasphemy is not new and therefore (one must hope) not terminal.

We like to drag authors from the casket Barthes put them in to present the corpse as proof of the “true” meaning of a text. Yes, there are some questions that only the dead author can answer, but meaning and interpretation go far beyond canonicity.

I'm shifting my focus to longer content. The quote and vocabulary posts will continue, as will article shares, but otherwise, I'm going to be posting less as I work on the blog I'll be launching later this year. Stay tuned for updates!

Perhaps that’s why readers tend to hoard books. I have shelves of books that I shall never read again because I've outgrown them, but I have no intention of disposing of them. They have significance in my own personal history.

No knock against the German language; I enjoyed my two semesters of it in college, but all I can recall now is "Ich kann Fledermäuse mit einem Eierlöffel töten," which is not only magnificently useless, but patently untrue!

I can categorically state that I've never gained a moment’s peace through worry. Preparation, yes, but once preparation is done, or if the thing cannot be prepared for, you gain nothing in trying to deal with it before it arrives.

Ghostwriting is essentially just commissioned writing, but the writer writes on behalf of someone else, using their voice. A ghostwritten text is attributed to someone else’s name and may be an autobiography, memoir, blog post, etc.
