April Sees Record Solar Energy Production in PJM Region Amid Efforts to Integrate Renewable Energy Sources into Grid April saw unprecedented solar energy production in the PJM region, with output reaching record levels. This milestone reflects both the increasing capacity of solar generation facilities and the efficiency of PJM's interconnection process. PJM is actively working to integrate new energy resources, predominantly solar, wind, and battery storage, into the grid. More than 60% of the approximately 200,000 MW of projects undergoing the new interconnection cycle are now in progress. To handle this increasing volume, PJM has implemented advanced tools that streamline project processing and minimize errors. Recently, PJM accepted 51 projects through the Reliability Resource Initiative, encompassing over 11,000 MW of natural gas, nuclear, and battery projects designed to bolster system reliability as intermittent sources like solar and wind continue to be integrated. These projects have been incorporated into the current interconnection cycle to accelerate their completion. PJM is also collaborating with states to address permitting and siting obstacles and to support the continued operation of existing power plants until replacement resources are available. Efforts are underway to optimize existing interconnection capabilities, including modifications to Surplus Interconnection Service to accommodate facilities with variable operating schedules, such as solar generators paired with battery storage. Furthermore, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is considering reforms to expedite the interconnection of new resources by leveraging the capacity rights of retiring plants.
